At the risk of sounding like a really bad joke, Petty may not be dead.

Yeah, I just said that.

LAPD says it cannot confirm his death and CBS has retracted its earlier report of his death.

Uh, wow.

Legendary rocker Tom Petty remains in the hospital “clinging onto life,” according to TMZ. He isn’t expected to live much longer.

The 66-year-old singer and songwriter was rushed to the UCLA Santa Monica Hospital Sunday night after being found unconscious and not breathing in his Malibu home. He suffered from a heart attack, according to TMZ. He was placed on life support but has been removed after he had no brain activity, TMZ reported.

A chaplain has been called to Petty’s room, and the family has a do not resuscitate order on him.

Conflicting reports on Monday said the singer had passed away.

He's been unconscious long enough that there's no brain activity.

You're gonna have to change the thread title from dead to not quite.

I know, there's a General Franco joke here somewhere.

This is my all-time favorite Petty song. I always loved the fact that my all-time favorite band (Sister Hazel) was from Gainesville, FL and one of my top 5 solo artists too in Petty. I am so saddened and crushed right now. After the news this morning in Vegas, and now this on top of personal stuff, I'm at a loss.

I am a HUGE music whore and have been to hundreds if not over (1000) concerts in my lifetime and am so glad I got to see him perform live. Absolutely one of the greats.

Thank you for the music, Tom. May you keep rocking in the afterlife.

In my travels, and living, across America - claiming to be from the same town, and HS as Petty, was one of the things I took some pride in. Never made it to a concert but always appreciated the music he made. He will certainly be missed.

From what I was told, he dropped out of Gainesville High School, never graduated. Also, heard he didn't really care for Gainesville in that he felt they didn't get the support they deserved while trying to make it as a band.

Rest in Peace, music man.
We camped out for tickets when he finally came back to Hogtown.

Wow.

Rough October 1st.

This is one of those "I remember where I was when I heard the news" items.

Petty was the best thing Hogtown ever produced.....

He's alive but only in clinical terms. No brain activity. He's been taken off life support under a DNR. Just a matter of time.
