"Coach" Mac doesn't coach during games

I'm a lifetime lurker since this forum opened (thanks Ox for the forum). I feel the need to post since this topic has not come up (that I can tell), despite all the other coaching analysis/criticism posts.

I attend nearly every home game and went to Dallas this year as well. We sit on the Gator's side, alumni section and are able to watch the team interactions with coaches.

Here's the issue: during games, and at the most critical times, Mac doesn't actually coach the team. When the offense or defense huddle during timeouts, changes of possession, or quarters, he walks away. The assistants coach the players. I've attended games in the Swamp for 23 years and never seen a Gator coach do this so routinely.

This has become very frustrating to watch, especially as the QB guru has a lost freshman, an OC in the box, and no one on the field to coach that freshman in-game.

As a new poster, I figured I'd add video proof to avoid all "fake news" claims. Note these all come from the fourth quarter vs LSU, when the score was 16-17. In two we are on offense, one defense, but Mac is never near any players. I would have more but kept forgetting to video in time.

The gif/vid quality is low due to my inability to convert them well (or figure out how to post videos).

Second - there was an extensive thread about Davis not going down and how Mac wanted him to take a knee on the last Vandy TD. Well, it would have been nice if Mac was in the huddle to tell him. Vandy called a timeout prior to that 4th down and per usual Mac was not around the offensive players huddle during the TO to tell them his important plan. Instead, he later bytched to the assistant coaches.

Last - also back to Vandy: for the first time in those 23 years, the announcer yelled "heeeere come the Gators" and the band kicked in. Except the Gators didn't come. They weren't ready to take the field. About 20 seconds later they jogged on. No excitement. I've never seen that. He talks of limited home opportunities for players in their career to experience the Swamp, and yet, he stole that one from them by not having them ready to go.

Welcome aboard SEC14, great observations, obvious another piece to the puzzle as to why this team is so dysfunctional, and lacking basic fundamentals.

I saw Mac get in one players face (Taylor)during a game after a throat slash and one time he comforted Franks after he threw a pic in the spring game. I have rarely seen him interact on the sidelines since unless you include telling his assistant to have his players give up and fold.

Nice post. I recently moved my seats from section 14, row 23 and, I have been absolutely shocked at the lack of coaching huddles when the teams come off the field after possession change. In most games, even high school, the unit that comes off the field immediately huddles with a coach or, coaches and discusses the previous series and the next series or more.

Mac is just F'ing lazy. He hired a very poor coaching staff and it appears that he is completely uninvolved in the in-game adjustments and planning.

I know some coaches delegate a lot. Meyer was that way on the offensive side of the ball. The HBC was that way when it came to the defense. I've never seen a coach basically delegate everything which is what you are insinuating. I'm not saying you are wrong. I take your word for it as it explains questions I've had from the beginning.

Since both coordinators are upstairs, just who IS coaching up the huddled units during breaks in the action?

Great post, welcome to the board. Guess that helps explains the lack of adjustments.

I wonder if he's as hands-off during 1/2 time also.

I am really hating this clown more than Muschamp. At least he worked hard

This!
Nice post but I can't say I am all that surprised. He needs to go at the end of the season and we need to start looking for a coach in some respect right now!

Yep. I left you in the hallway to mop up the sweat.

Then you a bad manager of janitors as well... you don't happen to be cross eyed and have a University Credit Card

On offense, it looks like Seider is most engaged on offense during sideline huddles. Defense, I'm less certain, but I believe Rumph.

Regarding prior coaches delegating, they did but were rarely so distant (frequently 20-30 yards away from the sideline huddles) and disengaged, especially at such crucial times. Mac being nearby is the exception, not the rule.
