Petty increased his commercial success teamed with Lynne, but I didn't care much for the ELO infusion. Give me the Heartbreakers.

I'm at the Band of Horses concert in St. Pete. The opening act just played "I Won't Back Down". Nice tribute.

That was the most enjoyable part of the game.

NBC is airing a '79 SNL with Petty and the Heartbreakers as guest musician at 10 p.m.

And yet the only people that continue to back down are our head coach, OC, and Special Teams whatever he is, he sure as F is not a coach, with the utter crap they continue to put on the field week after week.

Game aside, a bittersweet tribute. It's as almost part of my childhood and youth are gone. Great Tribute and hated that I couldn't get to Hogtown for it yesterday. But my children were in my seats and they've been brought on on TP& HB's. Hate to see that he's gone. RIP, TP!!!

I've heard covers of some of Tom's less than "edgy" songs and they show you what a great song writer he was. But for Won't Back Down, it would be best if nobody else tried. That song was meant for Petty.

View of the tribute from our seats. That's one of the coolest things I've ever been a part of. Had goosebumps throughout.

...or did Tom Petty's passing feel like losing an old friend? I know we've had a couple of threads, but this has been on my mind. I didn't get to see him and the Heartbreakers live (and that's something I regret), but I've listened to his music since I first heard it on WGLF-104 out of Tallahassee when I was in high school. Breakdown was the first song I remember hearing on the radio and I've been hooked ever since. First album of his I bought was Damn the Torpedoes, which I still have.

I have enjoyed hearing many of you guys share your Petty musical experiences, particularly those who discovered Mudcrutch at their beginnings. There was just something about not only the sound that he and the group could produce, but his songs spoke to you in a language that resonated with both the young and, well, not so young. It was relatable (if that's even a word). Such a prolific writer. The songs he covered were good to listen to as well and his takes, while often a little different from the originals, were worthy of comparison. Shady Grove comes quickly to my mind in this vein...

Petty gave us, I think, anthems for different stages of our lives. For me, The Waiting was teenage me.

When I was post-college and sowing my oats, You Wreck Me described my agenda and brain function. Kinda fighting adulthood, I suppose.

These days, the Mudcrutch reunion tune Scare Easy is pretty much it.

As hokey as it sounds, he was a man for all seasons. I'm glad he had so much music left to be listened to. The fact that UF honored him is certainly fitting and has been a bright spot for the last couple of games. Sad thing is I don't know if there's anybody like him that still makes music like he did.

Tom Petty was a one in a million kind of songwriter and musician. He was kind of like an ever expanding universe, but he always returned to his roots. He outgrew Mudcrutch and then later the Heartbreakers and then found his way to the Traveling Wilburys and did some recordings with Johnny Cash, yet still went back and cut albums with both MC and the Heartbreakers. He and the Heartbreakers played the Superbowl. That was really amazing. Think about the Traveling Wilburys for a moment; fuking Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Roy Orbison, Jeff Lynne and the skinny bucktoothed dude from Gainesville, Tom Petty. He fit right in. The first album the Wilburys cut was really just thrown together at George Harrison's house, just 5 friends that decided to do this thing together. Rolling Stone named it one of the top 100 albums of all time. Tom Petty was a giant.

A friend of mine was hit hard by the passing - he said he felt like he knew the man personally. This seems to be a common sentiment.
