What did mullen think was going to happen if he gave the ball back to bama? He lost the game as soon as he elected to punt on 4th and 2.

Like I said. He got lucky when they drove the field the first time with the missed FG. Mullen didn't have the guts to play for the win so he lost.

As much I have said Saban is the greatest coach in college football history (yes I grew up with the Bear, etc.), not even he is beyond doing things that make me shake my head and wonder why these coaches do things that make no sense to me. On this drive where they "doinked" the go ahead field goal, Bama ran the ball down the field using the RB's on every play and getting huge yardage. then they got a 15 yd. PI penalty to set them up on about the 15 yd. line. Bama then proceeded to motion the RB OUT of the backfield on 3 consecutive plays, all but conceding and telling the defense that they were going QB run or QB draw, given the time and score. All the while it was the RB runs that got them all the way there. Well they proceeded to lose about 8 or 9 yards on the next 3 plays then "doinked" the FG. Perhaps if they lose no yards they do not miss the FG or if they kept the RB in the backfield even as a decoy it might have freed up the QB run a bit. I understand Hurts is an excellent QB runner, but why completely abandon what got you there. amazes me how these coaches often "outsmart" themselves for no apparent reason.
