From what I read we did offer Gundy. He rejected it.

I think we offered Kelly around $5.5 million.

To be honest, I have serious doubts about that this is true for a few reasons. First, it's being reported that he is at least talking to UT about their job. Why would a coach prefer UT over UF, especially after this recent fiasco? Only vol alums would do that. Second, Strickland contacted Mullen on Friday since his last game was on Thrusday. Gundy played on Saturday. I doubt they would have serious discussions with him until after his final game, and by that time they already offered Mullen. They hired Mullen so quickly that they didn't leave much time to discuss the job with other coaches.

It's possible that they contacted him, and his reply was that he doesn't want to think about it until the season was over. So instead of waiting, they offered Mullen because his season was already over. But if they did go ahead and offer Gundy, I also have my doubts that they offered him 6 million.

For all those huffing and puffing about the 6 million per year:

1. He was making over 4 at MSU, and apparently they were contemplating upping it to close to 6
2. Like him or not, at least we know that UF is now willing to pony up and pay the big bucks.
3. Mostly importantly, his buyout is only $500k. If he is as bad as many here think he is, at least the buyout won't be an obstacle. I think it shows a lot of stones on Mullen's part to leave a safe and secure job to come into the lion's den with not a lot of financial backstop.

FWIW

Thanks, this is great news if all of this particularly point 3 is true.

I'm very curious as to when they offered him for my reasons stated, and I still have my doubts that the offer was for 6 million, but you deserve a like for providing the link.

I have no idea how much it was for. Although there has been some tweets refuting this. I think one was even from Pat Tooley refuting it.

As for the amount offered to Kelly I got that from another poster on here. But it looks like it was BS because Kelly already came out and said he was never offered the job or extended a contract.

Hell, T. Boone Pickens farts more money than that. BTW, Gundy's currently making $4.2m and rumor has it UT is offering to double it.

8 million is a lot of money, especially for someone who has never won a championship.

From the start, I was very much against hiring Mullen, but I would rather have one good coach who really wants to be at UF than to have 2 good coaches who do not want to be at UF. Mullen seemed very well grounded in his decision and genuinely happy to be here. That counts as a lot. Whether you love the hire or hate it, the time has come for us Gator fans to stop the whining and give 100% support to our new coach and team. Come on Coach Mullen, let's make Florida Football great again!

Dan Mullen, football coach at Florida. A football program barely alive. Gentlemen, can he rebuild it? We have the technology. We have the capability to build the world's next National Champion. Can Dan Mullen be that man? A program better than it was before. Better, stronger, faster.

I was under the impression that $500k was his MSU buy out and his UF buy out was $12 million?
If his MSU buyout was 500K why would we agree to 12 Million? I don't get putting 12 million on the back end that almost seems like an incentive to get fired. All I can guess is his agent told us Tenn was offering this kind of buyout so we had to match it.

To quote a Gator Legend,I think "God smiled on the Gators"with the Mullen hire. He has familiarity with the State and the University already and will hire a great staff. He will lock the recruits we have already down and bring some new ones from Mississippi State and across the nation. He's already gotten rid of the right assistant coaches (Nussmeir etc.) that needed to leave and he will bring discipline back to the program. He knows how to coach quarterbacks and gear an offense to the personnel he has on board already. Macelwain brought a weird vibe to U of F that I never understood. I just never got him. He was strange acting. After the Tennessee victory which was the most exciting of the year. I think he was out over his skis. Mullen is not! He knows what he is doing. Chip Kelley never was a realistic hire and Frost is a Cornhusker through and through and has never head coached at the SEC level. Who in the heck did you want? Jimbo Fisher will leave Half Ass U because he has had first shot at all the top State recruits since Meyer left and we failed to hire a decent coach. Now, in the state of Florida we have Richt at Miami, Mullen at Florida, and Strong at USF.I am leaving out Frost because I think he will leave the state. FSU was the beneficiary of our horrible selections at head coach and the same holds true for Miami,.Fisher is a mediocre coach at best and was the beneficiary of following a legendary coach and the above mentioned pitfalls of the other State universities. If you drive to Tally it is hard to imagine that anyone would rather go to school there than the University of Florida. Florida is a college town and always will be. Tallahassee is better know for being the State Capitol. Wait and see,our recruits will stay and more will come, it will just take a while. For the first time in a long time I am very optimistic. Go Gators!
