Chief & Cola, I think Rog’s post eluded your grasp.

Being very literal has its positives and negatives. I would expect him to use an artificial hand if he makes a team, no matter he is an inspiration to everyone who knows his story and read his letter. Let's make him an honorary member of Gator Chatter at least.

Great story. Reminds me of the baseball player Jim Abbott.

Hope he crushes it in the pros.

His Mom graduated from Mainland HS here in Daytona Beach with my youngest son and she and my son both now live in St.Petersburg. My son is a UCF grad and was on football scholarship under Coach Lou Saban and he and his family and the Griffins have tailgated @ UCF games for the past few years. Shaquem and his brother who plays for Seattle are twins and they have an older brother also. They have great supportive parents. Hope Seattle gets him so he and his brother can play together.

I heard he might be a third day pick, not first round. But this kid has been overcoming the odds his entire life/career. Wouldn't put anything past him.

Or Derrick Brooks.

Jevon Kearse went from HS safety to college LB to NFL DE. Crazy.
He grew taller too though. Its tough to play safety or even LB at 6'4", though I think Spikes was.

Kearse was a one trick pony but boy he was good at blitzing off the edge.

He was under appreciated at UCF until Frost arrived.

Alex.

How does this happen? Let’s pretend he is only a 3rd day future STs player. Let’s pretend he isn’t draft worthy at all. The kid is playing football while missing one of the most critical body parts for his particular sport. I get that maybe the move from safety to linebacker sparked his rise. And sure, new staffs often create a diamond out of a forgotten player. But how does anyone not think the absolute world of someone who’s chosen to fight through his limitations and give it his best?

All previous staffs are previous staffs for a reason, and bad decisions are an obvious part of things. But that might be one of the worst indictments of a coaching staff I’ve ever heard.

He's a converted safety. Came in under 190lbs. Weighed in at 227lbs. I don't know why more coaches don't try this. There are plenty of recruits each year that are slow safeties but could be fast linebackers once they gain the necessary weight like Griffin did.
4.38 is not a slow anything.

Obviously, I wasn't saying a 4.3 is slow. Kylan Johnson is the perfect example of what I'm talking about. We beat out Kansas St, UCLA, and Texas Tech among a few others. He clearly wasn't an SEC caliber safety. He wasn't fast enough. Add 35lbs and he goes from being a terrible safety to a fast linebacker that has contributed. I'd rather take some chances on guys like him than sign slow garbage like Lacedrick Brunson or Rayshad Jackson.

Single-handedly the best LB at the NFL combine.

Crazy!
And he wasn’t even invited initially; they apparently had to do some lobbying to even get him into the combine.

That was Jimmy Johnson’s formula at Miami. Recruit safeties and bulk them up to LB, recruit LBs and bulk them up to DEs, recruit DEs and bulk them up to DTs.

Works better with ‘roids.

I didnt know this.
Yep. He was a safety in HS and converted to LB in college. Santa Fe High School. In fairness not exactly the same as converting safeties from college to the NFL but he was converted at UF. He was first brought in as a safety I believe.
