Mehhhhh.... on that second pass to Swain (5:20) in the video, Franks doesn't throw to Moral Stephens vs the corner back. Good call, IMO. I don't care if he has inside leverage on a CB. That isn't Cornelius Ingram out there. The CB is baiting him and can recover, I suspect. Take the safe throw to the receiver.

Imo when they put those TEs (especially Raymond, Stevens, and Lewis who aren't receiver type TEs) or a HB outside to run a go route, they are just occupying the CBs and getting favorable matchups on the slot receivers. Of course, if I'm the opposing DC and I see that first play, with Scarlett wide, Swain in the slot and another receiver wide right, I tell my two safeties to favor Swain and the other receiver and feel pretty comfortable with a CB alone on Scarlett.

Stephens was recruited as a receiver for us. He was wide open but you have to actually deliver the ball on time and to the inside.

Nice that MS came back though and threw the block that sprung the TD.

He was open by a step or two...I'd prefer not to put the ball there with a CB who can recover quickly

Then zip it in there before he can react and lead him. This is not difficult, QBs do it all the freaking time. Good QBs squeeze it in there in much more contested coverages. If you can't connect with a wide open receiver like that, then quit playing QB.

That TD pass to Cleveland was a freaking dime. That ball was leaving a trail of burnt ozone behind it. It think it was 45 yards in the air and probably didn't get 15 feet off the ground.

Stephens is WIDE OPEN and takes that to the house. Franks isn't quite there yet mentally to make the read that quickly, however that is absolutely a throw that can and should be made. He bought himself extra time and made a good throw regardless.

I agree it was open but it just depends on what his progression is during that play whether he should have seen it or not IMO.

If you have two receivers breaking open the only problem is if you miss both. In this case Franks did good!

In Franks' defense, I can speak from experience that the tight end is so rarely the first read in a progression, he was probably just a run off route. Then again, Cleveland was the run off route on the last play against UT last year.

After watching the replay I noticed the placement was well executed on that throw as well since it was thrown to the outside shoulder so that only Cleveland could really get there. Excellent play overall especially when you consider it only happened because Scarlett made a hustle play to pick up the guy who was running free toward Franks. I especially liked Franks commentary on that play:

“That was huge,” Franks said. “It wasn’t even his guy, him just being a football player. All of our guys, they do just so much for me, giving me time in the pocket, blocking their tails off. On that play specifically, (Scarlett) just went out of his way to get a guy that could have came easily and just hit me in the back, fumble, anything like that.

“He went out of his way to pick him up for me. That’s guys being selfless. We’ve got a bunch of selfless players on this team that are really good players and they look out for us before they look out for themselves. That’s one of the greatest things about our team.
Those last sentences describe an attitude change that is a huge difference between this year's team and last year's. If that trend continues to evolve, it will definitely pay large dividends going forward.

Regardless, it shows Franks understanding the offense and knowing where to put the ball given the defenses and matchups.

I know some remain convinced that he's not smart enough to tie his own shoes and won't change their mind no matter what.

I have to apologize to big Fred Johnson. It was not him that whiffed on the block on Franks's run for a TD. It was Heggie. In my defense the GIF was fuzzy.

But law, you are the primary guy who has here-to-fore been convinced...etc. On what date did you leave that crowd?

As a bandwagon fan, I always reserve the right to change my mind on a weekly basis.

It's in the contract.

My bad. Knew that was in your contract, but thought there was a clause requiring you to announce you were changing.
It usally isn't actually changing my mind.

It is a divergence of heart and mind with heart taking over temporarily.
