Actually, I like the fact that he’s not always calling a blitz when most would expect him to. That’ll make other coaches think twice. BTW, he only rushed 3 when Stiner made the game ending INT.
Yes, but he wouldn't have had to make the INT. The games would have been over :) that's my point.

That WAS fun to watch. I thought his only mistake was not pressuring the QB when it was 4th and 19 and game and he only rushed 3, giving Joe time to complete that 1st down pass. Other than that, my hat's off to him and his ability to match up. He's especially handled Joseph perfectly IMO.

It looked like there were 42 DB’s out there, but no pressure. That play was pretty disappointing.

Just like the MSU game though I just got the sense that the D would hold.

Well, that's what it's supposed to look like when you're only rushing 3. My argument has always been, why give a QB that needs 19 yards time to throw a 19 yard pass. As a matter of fact, I don't think I agree with ever rushing only 3.

Grantham's scheme is all about poaching to create mismatches. We tend to like it more when it involves pressure on the QB. There's gonna come a time when we face a polished passing game that can exploit that aggression.

It’s a great point but isn’t that what you expect out of an upper tier coordinator? Using their experience plus the advise of their talented subordinates?

I remember hearing that from UGA friends. Maybe he learned something at Louisville/MSU due to less than stellar talent? Sometimes being at a disadvantage requires creativity/learning/etc.

I’m not 100% on board with your criticism of Mullen but by no means am I dismissing it. Every position group appears better now than they have in years (except OL but they are progressing and started so far behind) and seem to be in synch. Every playcaller will have headscratchers and Mullen is no different. I do worry about his ability to beat the Bama types but LSU was no slouch.

Exactly. He was only rushing three the entire last series. Burrow needs pressure, not time to let his receivers get open. This game might have been different if the LSU receiver didn’t drop that long pass that hit him in the hands.

It seems like almost all DC lose their nerve at times and fall into that "prevent defense" trap. Instead, he should have lowered the boom with Stiner again like the week before, especially with 19 yards needed.

You aren’t giving Mullen and his offensive staff near enough credit.

We're still scoring 14ish points on offense and doing some mindnumbing things (like trying to run wide with Scarlett and throwing 4 yards stops all the time).

They inherited a totally nonfunctional OL, but there is MUCH MUCH work to be done on offense.

I thought this was a nice compliment from Joe Burrow after the game: ""We knew they were going to be good on defense. They made some really good halftime adjustments, honestly." So even they recognized that UF made some good adjustments. I also thought that Mullen's comments after the game were telling - he mentioned that they figured LSU would make adjustments based on the MSU/LSU beatdown from last year, so they put some counter-adjustments into the gameplan based on what they thought LSU would do. And it worked.

I'm impressed by the coaching of this staff.

I feel like the scoring defense rating is legit, we definitely tighten up greatly in the red zone. However, I feel like the passing defense rating is inflated by us playing teams so far with zero passing attack. Our passing defense does get much better when #12 isn't on the field though. The OCs seem to have his number circled if he is out there.
