Some of you know I coach HS football. I have been to three straight title games and have gone 2-1. Second title came last night. Go me!!!

Not sure I could do this on a major level. It's not scheme or knowledge that I lack. I think I am smarter than most coaches because the ones I interact with seem kinda dumb to me. The obvious stuff they get wrong a lot. I see it a lot on Saturday too. I can't understand it.

Too often coaches focus on drills and individual stuff and don't teach the game. The smart side to football. They use big terminology without explaining it. Had one coach yell at a first year kid because he didn't slide down in the box. He didn't know what the box was.

Knowing football doesn't mean you can coach. Coaching is more teaching so players know what to do. This past week, we didn't put on pads. During practice, put the defense walking thru the opponents offense to the point they could recognize every run play based on formation, RB position, line stances, etc. Then after practice, reinforced on the white board. They were sick of it. Didn't care. We pitched a shut out in a state title game for 47 minutes and 37 seconds. The score we gave up was by the 9th graders we brought up who scrapped and clawed for 4 minutes before giving up the score.

When I asked the kids how it was going out there, the comment I got was "coach, they are running everything you said they would". In the handshake line, the opposing HC took me aside and told me he threw the whole playbook at us and couldn't move the ball. We gave up 93 yards of rushing and 62 yards of passing. About half of all that came on the last drive against the youngsters.

Coaching football for a high strung type A personality who hates to lose is too stressful which is why I couldn't do this at a college level. I just won my second state title last night and all I can think about now is next year. Didn't really enjoy the win because I didn't want my team to lose.

Kinda rambling, but our coaching staff, if they are anything like me, hate to lose and some of our fans should remember when the team loses, their jobs are on the line.

Congrats on the title. Well done. Also a good read. As a poster on here who often gets bashed, I appreciate how you physically practice the mental aspects of the game. Regardless of sport, my biggest complaint about "overpaid" coaches is their inability to manage a game. That could be clock management, player management, play sequencing, soundness of fundamentals, etc. Sure talent wins a lot, but often times attention to detail, sound fundamentals and good management can put a lesser talented team over the top.

Don't be so sure that you could not coach at a higher level. You seem to do things that a lot of coaches don't do. probably why I complain so much about most of the coaches out there when I see them make silly management mistakes on a daily basis, no matter the sport.

HUGE difference between knowing a sport (formations, plays, how to read, etc) and being able to teach it. Sounds like you have both, but the ability to teach elevates your program. Congrats on the winS.

Congrats Bush, Glad to hear you won. Coaching a team, any team, on any level is quite a feat. I've been ask to coach youth sports a couple of times but I really don't have a love of teaching or very much patience. I will say this though some of the strongest positive influences in my youth came from my Youth league through High School football and Basketball coaches.....They kicked my spoiled white a$$ good..., but it was good for me in the end.
I doubt most kids today get exposed to some of the stuff that coaches back then used as standard methods.....I also learned some very colorful language and expressions that have stayed with me through the years, such as
Get your head out of your a$$
Quit playing grabass and hit someone
What the f--k was that
Keep loafing and I'll put my foot in your ass
You're playing like a bunch of p---y's

But on the other hand when you followed instructions, put in effort and played as a team, there are very few moments in life that offer the satisfaction you got when praised by your coach.

Congratulations on the win and the summary of how you accomplished it. However, I see that there’s also a loss. What went wrong there?

Had 3 of my defenders out for a game and the other team was pretty good.

Its class 3 ball. Have a few kids who can play at D2/3 level and a couple of kids that might can play D1. Have one kid that I would like to get his film to UF. Best combo of speed, strength, balance, and wiggle I have ever seen. He has a college body and is a junior. It actually pisses me off when he doesn't score every time he touches the ball. He is that good.

That must've been the regional title game. State championship is Dec. 8.

Great thread BM. Very interesting comments about teaching the game - I played HS ball in the mid 80's and my experience was similar; a lot of yelling, very little teaching. I played DB mostly and didn't know WTF a "cover 2" was until about the 3rd game of my sophomore season! :D

I'm retiring from the military in less than two years and plan to move to the Tampa area. I'm trying to get a job lined up w/ CENTCOM, but if that falls through I'm considering becoming a HS teacher and coaching football (if I can get a job doing it).
