It was before it became public knowledge how dangerous prescription drugs could be, but I had my own brush with it. Really the only thing I had ever heard about it was the Brett Farve thing - but I didn't really have any details on that other than it was prescribed.

I was prescribed Oxycontin for some pretty painful injuries I suffered when a ladder I was working on collapsed after being struck by a tree limb. I didn't have any broken bones but there was swelling in my left knee and elbow that basically immobilized me for a bit. They sent me home with the pills. First week, no problem I took as needed when the pain started peeking through. Pretty soon though I found myself watching the clock for when I could take them even after the pain was mild enough that I wouldn't normally even have bothered with a packet of BC. It's about that time that through the fog I realized what was happening. I threw them in the trash. Now I consider myself as a guy with a pretty firm constitution but I swear to you it was all I could do to force myself to not dig them out of the trash. As disgusting as that is it was almost the only thing I could think about. I had to make my wife carry the bag to the truck and go with me to the dump to get them out of reach.

The stuff is dangerous and probably should never be given to anyone that isn't in a hospital under the direct supervision of a doctor.

Again I can always tell when people have never experienced chronic pain.

I began kidney stones in my late 20s. My FIL gave me his "kidney stone medicine" as he called it. Demerol. It literally destroyed that pain and made me feel amazing. Later on my doctor gave me a Rx for it so I always had it for a flare up. Problem was they were usually years apart and my family (with migraines and what not) had borrowed them. FF years later when I had one after a LONG duration and no med. Well, the VA gave dad lots of oxycodone for his pain. He gave me some and I discovered with one beer and one oxy I could weather the pain. I never felt the need for more. But my first kidney stone and a few others were AMAZINGLY painful. One I had no pain meds and wife took me to emergency room at N Fla in gville. I am begging them for something and telling them how I did it..........fckn Doc says "how much demerol to you take Mr ******, my reply is enough so this fckn stone does not rip me apart you azzzhole" THey gave me a shot of something that barely did anything.

My dad's VA meds are mailed to him. People with chronic pain could still get oxy - but they shouldn't be getting a 30 day supply at a time like they sent me home from the hospital with. That is courting disaster.

I have used the VA for the last 10 or so years. They claim they don't even carry oxy yet alone send it to someone with chronic pain. When a person has chronic pain, NOBODY and I mean nobody understands it unless they have experienced it.
