These statistical improvements speak for themselves. Do we still need to improve? Most definitely! But averaging a ranking improvement of approximately 73 positions over these 8 offensive statistics in one year's time is a huge accomplishment! This is especially encouraging relative to our new staff given that these improvements were made with a team where 80% is comprised of the same personnel.

When you add our massive improvement in turnover ratio to these stats, you start to see how this transformation is really founded in the overall cultural change Mullen (with a huge assist from Nick Savage) has orchestrated from the moment he arrived. That trend also extends to similar levels of improvement in special teams and in the defense's ability to continue to hold their own despite our thin roster in key defensive positions.

Overall, I think that Mullen year 1 has been a major success on the field. Now it comes down to recruiting which I also think is trending in the right direction overall in terms of relationship building and establishing a pipeline of recruits over a 3 year HS window. The only remaining question is whether Mullen can close strongly with this year's class. I think if he even delivers a class in the top 15 he'll deserve an overall 'A' grade as long as the class addresses our biggest areas of need.

I guess I, like many others, underestimated the value of getting a 9 year SEC coaching veteran who also had an established track record for turning around a perennial SEC bottom dweller to have success in the brutal SEC West.

I am therefore now officially super psyched for our hire of Coach Mullen (albeit a year after the fact)! :)

Mullen is a shoe-in for SEC Coach of the Year.

He certainly would get my vote! Given UK's surprising run this year, however, Stoops' may end up being awarded COY especially given his 6 year tenure at UK verses Mullen being in his first year at UF.

Now let’s see if he can recruit.

Stoops will likely finish second in the voting.

Can we now start accepting Mullen can coach?

Shane Mathews said that Mullen would have a Top 50 Offense. He was off by 6...Not bad.

This list doesn’t take into account of the FSU game

Florida is 43rd in total offense (ESPN, 48th NCAA)

I’ll give the preseason know it alls a pass for firing Mullen before the first snap.

It’s as clear as day we are well coached and with an influx in talent there aren’t that many out there that can out scheme Mullen. But the recruiting definitely needs to pick up

Someone mentioned that the stats I originally posted did not include the FSU game so I went out to a cumulative statistics site (2018 Team Offense | College Football at Sports-Reference.com) and compiled this comparison between the offenses for this year and last year. I was actually surprised to see that there was significant improvement in nearly every single category! The most notable improvements are with points per game, yards per game, and first downs per game. The only real negative was with penalty yards per game increased by 6 yards which isn't great but we seem to always be more flag prone than most teams for some reason.

This prompted me to also go and do a similar comparison on the defense. Though, the improvements are noticeable, there isn't nearly the overall improvement that you see with the offense. The biggest difference here was clearly in scoring where teams averaged a touchdown less per game.

So I decided to pull the Special teams stats to complete the picture and I was admittedly a bit surprised to see no real change in ranking. Upon further reflection, though, I realized that this was more a testament to the two new kickers stepping ably into the big shoes they had to fill. The only other significant changes were a sizable increase in punt return yards (thanks to Swain) and a lower number of punts per game which is really more of a reflection of the increased offensive production.

Overall this analysis really shows how much the overall offensive production increase contributed to our turnaround. I therefore really have to give more credit to the improvements made by Franks, the OLine, and especially to the whole offensive coaching staff that found a way to maximize the potential of all our players and getting them to gel into a unit. Pretty impressive for one year! :)
