I ran a similar play when I coached youth league. I’d have the qb pull from under center and act like he couldn’t hear me from the sideline. Then walk towards me and raise his hands as if he was going to call timeout. The center would be watching the defensive line, and as soon as they stood up, he’d snap it to the running back.

perfect fake would be go up the line on fourth and 1 and try to make them jump off side (anywhere from the their 40 to the 50) . Then TAKE the five yard penalty. 4th and 6..

Had a good buddy who is a UGA fan finally respond to my question as to what he thought of the play call. He sent a LONG explanation, defending the "thinking " behind the play with all the usual arguments and a few new ones that were even more over the top. He identifies as being a full tilt homer and acknowledges that most experts wouldn't agree.
I responded by telling him he had used a lot of words to "defend the indefensible". It's like trying to justify Fourth and Dumb. Just can't be done.
