I'm sure most of you have already heard... Kuchar was in Mexico last November and won the Mayakoba Classic which gave him a total winning of ~$1.3M. Prior to the event, Kuchar made arrangements with a local Caddie to pay him $3k for the weekend. If he won, then Kuchar agreed to pay him $4k. After the win, Kuchar proposed to pay him an additional $15k but the Caddie thought that wasn't right. So, Kuchar paid him $5k.

Now, after the backlash, Kuchar is ponying up $50k for this guy. I mean, a deal is a deal.

Kuchar to apologize to caddie, pay him full $50K

What does Kuchar have to apologize for? He said they made a deal in advance. He did nothing wrong.

I know the guy wasn't Kuchar's regular caddy and was just filling in, but not sure why Kuchar didn't think it fair to pay him the customary rate? Maybe the guy was just carrying the clubs and not doing all the things a caddy normally does?

Agreed but the deal was the deal. Maybe because he was Mexican, and on that side of the Wall, Kuchar felt he had the negotiation power?

It doesn't matter, they had an agreement. If the guy didn't like the agreement, then don't carry the clubs. Kuchar could have found scores of people to carry his clubs for free.

I understand they had an agreement. What I don't understand is why the guy agreed to be the caddy for such a low amount in the first place. I'm wondering if he did tour level caddy stuff or just carry the clubs around.

Clearly he thought Kuchar sucked. Has to be the only explanation.

Did it say whether it was 50k in dollars or pesos. If it was pesos the guy was probably better off with the 5k in dollars.

Kuch has been destroyed and no one from the golfing community came to his rescue. He pissed off a lot of people including his sponsors.

He walked it back. There also was no agreement if he won, fyi. He did more than just carry clubs. The crowd was cheering for Kuch the whole time...why...his f ing caddie.

It was bush league and his reputation took a major hit.

Kuchar seems to be a better negotiator than our sitting president who claims to be the best.

So if I’m hearing you correctly Kuchar is going to get the wall built...from coast to coast...25 feet tall of see through concrete...ahead of schedule & under budget to boot?

My understanding is that the 10% going rate for a tour caddie is partially due to the caddies having to travel every week and deal with the BS of being on the road all the time just like the golfer they work for whereas the stand ins like this guy are locals that don’t sacrifice their lives for the game hence the lower payouts.

Part of the joy of traveling to some bean bag country like Mexico is is that you can pay a ridiculously small amount for goods and services there and make yourself feel generous in doing so. You guys are trying to ruin this small pleasure for Kuch. He was feeling super magnanimous, knowing that he paid 'Pepe" or whatever his name is enough money to keep his family in beans and rice for several years. Now everyone's trying to guilt trip him about it.

I hear stories like this and it just makes me want to build a wall all the more.

Total and complete nonsense. Why the hell would there have to be an agreement if he won? He offered the guy X dollars to be his caddie for the tournament. What difference does it make where he finished?

Also, being cheered for like crazy the whole tournament is probably a negative and not a positive for these guys.

Kuchar is a class act and always has been. The assertion that this did some kind of long-term damage to his reputation is laughable. That Mexican was happy with the 5K until some of his asshat buddies got in his ear.

Not only would I have not given him one more cent, I would have hired some goons down there to beat the guy up and get the 5K back.....then used it to pay the goons.

Industry standard is 10-15% of the purse.

Just because the caddie is a Mexican doesn’t mean he deserves less. Regardless if he was a fill in. This cheapens the integrity of the sport.
They made an agreement in advance of the tournament. The caddie did not have to accept the terms. If Kuchar had been cut and made nothing, the caddie would still have received the 5K. Maybe that would have been unfair to Kuchar and he could make a federal case over it, too. :rolleyes3:

Saying this situation "cheapens the integrity of the sport" is so over-the-top silly that I nearly keeled over.

Next I'll be accused of being a racist. That's how the script goes with debates these days.
