Will Sammon published an article on Chris Steele today (sub required). Here are the highlights.

1. "Steele has worked with the first team all spring."

In Mullen's time at UF, he has made players earn their spots. This means Steele is still with the ones because he has outperfomed the guys behind him. (My observation, not Sammon's)

2. “I got to give it up to Chris Steele,” Grimes said. “He comes out here, he competes with me everyday, he calls me out. Just today he had a pretty nice hit on me, he knocked the ball out. He’s going to be great, and props to him.”

3. “He’s a freshman, but he’s improving,” Gray said. “He is making steady improvements, and that’s all you can ask of a freshman. I love the progressions he is making.

4. “I like him because he came in with a great mindset and was ready to work,” Henderson said. “I’m thinking he’s going to be very good. He’s put his head down. He’s been taking notes. He’s been listening to coaching. He’s what you look for in a freshman.”

DBU baby.

Boy Theo, wouldn't it chap Swonkey's azz if Trask was so likeable & dedicated to the program that Mullen kept him on as a GA?

Maybe. But miracles do happen.

The word is he has been a complete mismatch. Linebackers are too slow. Safeties are too small. If the reporting is to believed, he has a chance to be a star if Franks can get him the ball. We will see.

Thomas Goldkamp just wrote this,

"It wouldn't be a total surprise if Jalon Jones ended up playing a different position on offense at some point, but at the very least it's safe to say he's headed for a redshirt in 2019."

Anyone who has seen JJ throw knows he has mechanics issues and won't be playing this season. It is Franks, EJ, and Trask. There's plenty of time to fix his mechanics. After Franks it'll be EJ. To write something like this seems nothing more than click bait.

Over/under 11.5 catches for Pitts? I throw that number out due to the other TEs and the total receptions for the TE position.

There's been a lot of talk about Franks in this thread, so I'd like to add my 2 cents. don't think Franks has hit his peak, but if he has then I hope he's at least consistent. If Franks for the most part consistently plays as well as he did in the bowl game, then that alone will be big improvement overall over the course of this season compared to last year. No one thinks he'll be elite, but I think he'll end up being pretty good for us, which is a huge step up from what we've had the last 9 years. That said, the success of this season is largely dependent on the O-line. Hope those guys develop quickly.

I bet he gets like 20 this year. But he can't have drops. I heard he had some hands issues at one of the practices or scrimmages.

He seems like a CI type of TE, rangy & athletic, big enough to play the in-line and block. When he pops out in the slot the mismatches you describe remind me of SOS’s use of Kirkpatrick. Totally different offense but that mismatch principle in that slot is a key pressure point in both.

But yeah, everyone looks promising in spring. Just part of the off-season drill.

The only way I can see him getting to 20 is if he lines up at WR more than TE. The TE's as a group, likely get around 30-40 catches on the entire year. We simply do throw it that much. When you divide the other catches w/ the WR group (Grimes, Jefferson, Cleveland, Toney, Swain, Hammond, etc) and the RBs there just aren't that many catches to go around.

We had 217 completions last year. Only 3 players had more than 20 catches (#4 had 14 catches).

Last years TEs:

Lewis 9, Pitts 3, Krull 6, Gamble 7, Stephens 8 = 33 (if you add RJ Raymond you get 1 more catch, 34)

How much of that owes to our QBs difficulty making reads in the middle, though? I'm not saying he's going to have some kind of miracle season - but I think he's got to be a least a little better.
If he learns to see and throw seam routes on time with the match-up problems Krull and Pitts create...:chomp:

Sure, he could improve his numbers....but he'll also be playing behind 4 new OL starters who have looked like sh*t so far this spring. I think the numbers are similar to last year...because that's how Mullen runs his offense. I expect to see Franks have better running numbers, and maybe a slight improvement in passing. Mullen's offenses don't usually have big passing numbers. And...let's say he improves his passing numbers 10% (completions) - that's an extra 21 receptions.

Mullen slung it down the field plenty of times last year....too many for my notion considering his QB....
