Heck, remember the Halloween Ball:burn2:

Yes! Yes I do remember the Halloween Ball. That thing was just plain nuts. That was one of the first campus events I went to as a freshman. I looked at my friend and said "So...this is UF? This is college? okay...."

He wasn’t a big hit, he was taping part of the act for his TV show and he came out and told everyone to cheer when he brought some no talent on the stage and then he had to redo it for some reason so he introduced the no talent again and told everyone to cheer. Needless to say everyone in the crowd was a little POd by this time and started to boo.
They had a bunch of students come out of the stands to gather in front of the stage too. Don't know if that was because he needed an audience in front of him or because of the taping. Then his jokes kind of fell flat as you can imagine. Robin Williams was the year before and he worked blue. And Dangerfield the year before that. So Bob Hope was kinda boring.

Halloween Ball was by far the craziest thing that used to happen on campus.

IMO, social media access, sec network, 24-7 sports news, big screen HD TV, and ball games on two or three weekdays killed stuff like this. Just sad as an out of state fan, I never got to see it in person, but love the stories I have heard.

This is the one I went to and remember.
“In the ’80s, Student Government Productions held many great free shows at the UF bandshell - Molly Hatchett at the peak of their popularity, Peter Frampton, the Allman Brothers, The Fixx on their first U.S. tour, Oingo Boingo, Pat Matheny, and of course, the last great Halloween Ball in Fall of ’81 with Wendy O. Williams and the Plasmatics,” Walker said.

Where have all the concerts gone?

I think Robin Williams was my last Growl tour. Yeah, my first official PARTY at the number one party school as a frosh was the Ball on the Plaza, at the end, there was no grass, literally just bottles, cans and rejected gear!... Wendy O, blowing up her pink Cadillac. I think was my last Ball.. good times, Go Gators

Mine were all in the 90s and it was still a big deal. Although the lineup was starting to get a little weak. Ray Romano got booed off the stage. Dave Chappel killed it and really pissed off the alumni for how dirty he was. Sister Hazel made a surprise appearance.

Gator Growl was fun, and definitely a unique UF thing. I think most of the frat/sorority's had the most fun w/ it (w/ the skits). I saw Gary Shandling, Dennis Miller, Sinbad, and Jay Leno (in 87, I was a senior in HS that fall and my sister was at UF). Seinfeld did 88, I think.

I imagine nowadays you'd have 30,000 faces staring at their damn cellphones for three hours....

Hobart Neville. Or Lester Hale reading the preamble to the constitution. The best part was the fireworks coming out of the old south endzone. So they were right above us. Jim Stafford was good on year. Robin Williams was my favorite. Way back in the day (early 70s) we would go get some fast food , walk right in east side and pick any seat. HS bands that marched in the parade would be there. IF FAMU was there it was a real highlight. One year they played Rocket Man during the fireworks. Another it was Come Together by the Beatles obviously. GG was magic to me. One year Albert took off his head and it was Emmitt. Another year Pres Lombardi made this serious speech behind his desk (on video) and then got up and walked around in his boxers...............

Oh yes, some of the weirdest wildest sh@t I ever saw was at the Halloween Ball. That covered walk way between Library east and west was like a promenade for all the freaks to walk in their costumed sartorial splendor. I think the walking penis that would rise and fall and actually Old Faithful sometimes was the funniest.
