I've been assured by several here that this is a good thing, and certainly a luxury well deserved by the players. After all, he was was here nearly 10 weeks, and likely cost us a QB this past cycle. If he wants to leave with no 1-year sit-out hanging over his head to deter it, he should be able to.
Correct me if I'm wrong...
I don't follow this stuff closely. But what's different with the portal? You still have to sit out a year unless you're a grad, right? I don't see the change. How is the portal more advantageous to the players than the old system?

Once you put your name in the portal coaches can contact you.

You have to sit out a year unless you can convince the NCAA a close family member is "sick" and needs you to be "closer" to home.

Don't forget, if the coach or another player hurts a players feelings, said player is allowed to transfer now without sitting out a year.

He can probably convince the NCAA that the coaches are persecuting him for being a dumbass, so he should be able to play immediately at Maryland, where there is a history of dumbassery.

They can talk and "be recruited" by other teams. You couldnt in the past.

They also arent required to leave. It is just a chance to look around.

Might be reading too much into this, but there is a quote in an article Will Sammon published today. It is on Anthony Richardson's recruitment. Here is the quote,

When Richardson met with Florida’s coaches during the time after he decommitted, the staff told him they might have to recruit two quarterbacks because their quarterback room might experience departures.

This is going back early into spring practice or even before. So, JJ transferring couldn't be about position switching. This isn't about Franks possibly leaving because there is no chance of that occurring at this point. So who is Mullen referring to other than JJ? Whatever is going on, the situation is up in the air while Mullen was recruiting AR. The word "might" is used. Just thought this little quote interesting.

Trask isn’t the best fit, so...

It’s been rumored for weeks this kid got into some trouble and not the drug kind...when he played in the spring game I thought maybe that was cleared up but clearly there’s more to this and it’s not about playing time

I read the same thing this morning and came over here to talk about it, so well done, sir!

I believe it is at least both. The changing times at the QB position in the NCAA means that if you don't have a clear path to start, and soon, there is a high risk of that recruit leaving. Additionally, they may have already known something from Franks that he intends to go pro after another "good" year. Considering the QB room wasn't filled with five-star QBs anyway, the staff probably thought it best to be prepared and load up two good QBs this year and let Richardson know so there was no hard feelings about it, no blindsiding by the staff.

Doesn't matter anyway, I believe, because if you recruit two top QBs, one of the them is going to bolt anyway, so you are right back where you were. We are in enough of a deficit at the LOS that the current situation at QB really doesn't ring any alarm bells for me. Hopefully Franks gets better at reading through his progs, continues to giraffe like a beast on the ground, and we win a lot of games, which is the best thing for getting more top talent at all positions in here anyway.

I'd say it's better to bring in a transfer QB rather than another QB in this class unless of course the HS QB blows us over with his passing skills. I hope for our sake Trask does not decide to transfer this month.

Also there are a few DL we can pick from the portal, like Davin Cotton from LSU or Ron Tatum from Oklahoma. They sit out a year and are available for 2020 right when we need them and having undergone a college level S&C for couple of years are definitely preferred over green freshmen.

These are our current QBs:
NO NAME POS HT WT CLASS HOMETOWN
#5 Emory Jones QB 6'-2" 192 FR Lagrange, GA
#11 Kyle Trask QB 6'-5" 239 SO Manvel, TX.
#13 Feleipe Franks QB 6'-5" 227 SO Crawfordville, FL.
#17 Nick Sproles QB 6'-2" 211 SO Winter Park, FL.
#19 Jack Ruskell QB 6'-2" 195 FR Libertyville, IL.
#42 Jaylin Jackson QB 5'-9" 160 FR Tampa, FL.
#4 Kadarius Toney RB 5'-11" 194 SO Mobile, AL.

We're good with Feleipe Franks throwing for 3,500 yards this year and going Pro afterwards.

Even w/a possible injury to Franks this year, we have Kyle Trask (or Emory Jones) to come in and win games.
I know, most of you just fainted, woke up from said faint are are eagerly pounding away at your keyboard to make me understand, and share, in your version of "doom and gloom" in this scenario.

We're good.

CDM will coach em all up and have them playing at a very high level this year and their success will probably hinge more on our O-line play than any other single thing to include:
- ability
- whether they're "smart enough"
- the play book

Then, CDM will do a great job in recruiting and get a good QB out of high school to come to the Gators. He will.

Then, we'll still have Kyle Trask and Emory Jones (order will be flip flopped based on ability IMHO) to sling it around in 2020 while the new QB learns the ropes and takes over in 2021.

Here’s what I’ve learned although it doesn’t fill in all the blanks. It’s a Title IX incident. It involved a woman passed out in his room and though I don’t know specifics we can probably guess. A couple of other players saw her and flipped out on Jones because that is “forbidden” under this staff. Not girls I guess but passed out girls. The other players informed the staff and the end result was Jones was told to look elsewhere.

Kind of goes along with the tweet from Unk Silk
