He is right about this, IMO. I think around half our our Cali types have gone home.
I guess you could say the same about Florida recruits that go away for college? I also wouldn’t lump them all in the same bucket. I’m willing to give more weight to those that are extremely higher ranked and have a solid foundation as more to the story than just homesick. But hey, maybe it’s just me.

The ones who go across the continent, yes, like Moody.

Most of these kids want to be at least on the same coast.

Mama can jump in the car and drive from Maryland or Va to Fla (or the other way around). A lot harder to drive from Cali to Fla. Money for tickets may or may not be an issue.

Their prospects matter though. Kids dont want to go to WV or South Dakota but sometimes they have no better option.

Steele can pick his landing spot, unfortunately for us.

Is it possible that when Steele made waves about JJ, he was ostracized by his teammates for breaking some lockerroom code?

SAS?

He seems like a good kid. I hope this all comes out.

So... we’re still blaming the previous coaches?

And Mullen was never known as a great recruiter. Yes, we landed a high class but take these 2 out and we’re down to 14th in that class. Not to mention the new recruits that won’t touch us with a 10’ pole.

It’s been a day, so the last part may be slightly exaggerated. But no I’m not blaming anyone, and have mentioned Mullen’s recruiting concerns in this thread. But his starting point has an impact. Not sure that’s debatable. The perception of this is much worse because it’s our only 5*, and because it likely puts a 2* on the field considerably more. Again, not making excuses. That’s just the reality of where we were, and to a degree, still are.

And every class has defections, career ending injuries and busts. Retro-ing the grade is nice offseason banter 10 years from now. As is, his class was what it was. No one regrades the 2007 class with Brown, Davis and the WR from Lakeland never playing much, or at all. That part happens.

Thanks Sofla for clarifying. While I don’t agree with your assertion, “These 18 yo aren’t the same that stormed Normandy” not sure there are any. We evolve. The Millennial Generation is over and we’re moving to the next which all signs are pointing to be the complete contrast.

I guess I hear what you’re saying and I understand the POV, I don’t agree and think it’s shallow, especially for a highly regarded recruit that seems extremely grounded.

I agree. I said this morning, I’d struggle to do what was asked of Steele when I was 17. I don’t knock him for his decision, and don’t mean to question his character. I just also don’t doubt that his distance from home played a factor. If he’d stayed with his original pick in Usc, I think he’d be more inclined to stick it out in a case like this. It’s human nature.

Question his character? Im proud of him.

Not so proud of how we handled this. It is a learning experience.

We landed Tabor over Arizona for that very reason. He said he thought about how far away it was and couldn’t do it. If he doesn’t have that thought at the last minute, he may well have been the exact same case. Nukeese Richardson’s parents were devastated when he chose tenn because they wanted him away from home but still accessible. I could go on and on.

I think it’s being seen as some type of character slight if being homesick played a role. It isn’t. If all goes well, I’m guessing he’s a Gator for 3-4. As is, especially so early, it’s just a really bad first impression of your choice.

If it is revealed Mullen and/or his staff was involved in pressuring the girls to not press charges and that comes out as something more than a rumor he’s finished.

Very quiet from the staff right now and that is not good in the age where information true or false can get way ahead of you.
I just wouldn't understand if true or why other coaches have done this (Briles). You risk your job to cover up for some bad apples that would have ruined the program anyway. Let those pieces of schit fry. Especially don't get it for coaches who have daughters. I hope Mullen didn't.

I believe Aaron Hernandez came down from Conn. to get away from his inner circle. I think there are a lot of other athletes that have that same mind frame.

Fine. There are cases of both I’m sure. Ftr, id bet a flight to Hartford from GV or Jax is about half the time and half the cost. But yes, there can be cases like that.

But as you’ve pointed out, CS seemed to be a well grounded kid who didn’t have a bad inner circle. Wouldn’t that mean that both he and his family wouldn’t be nearly committed to his being elsewhere and might even be a very tight group? I’m trying to see this as a parent. If I’m 6 hours away and I hear my 17 year oldson struggling with something like this, with his career possibly being affected, I’d be very supportive if not demand that he get closer to home. Again, none of this knocks them nor exonerates Mullen.

I’m starting to think you lost money on this somehow. You’re typically not this argumentative.

I’m not trying to be argumentative, especially with you. I too am a parent of two young boys. I left home at 18 and never looked back. I think the argument of homesick might be relevant but it’s not the end all, be all.

I look at this more of a Issue with the staff. It’s clear that CS made it clear he wasn’t happy with his roomie and for good reason. Sure, most are saying it’s not that easy but these are football athletes we are talking about, not general public.

I guess we just don’t see it the same.

On the second part we do. Mullen looks to have botched this, though I’ll afford him the same time for facts to come out. But on the surface, couldn’t look worse.

I’m just not sure once his name started being mentioned alongside an alleged rapist, Steele or his family were going to just sit and do nothing. His dad alluded to that in the tweet. Every time his name was in the same sentence as Jones, it was troubling. And again, this is all happening within a few months of leaving home. I left when I was his age, and like you, never looked back. But I also didn’t experience anything like this.

To your first point, I’m not sure there is an end all, be all. As I’ve said, looks like a bad combination of things.

A couple things...I'm trying not to bash Mullen or Steele until more facts come out. There will be more than enough time to bash CS if he's a homesick snowflake. We need answers. I feel like I'm in bizarro land being one of the hold off posters. Normally, I am passing out pitchforks and torches.

Let's wait and see first. I would be shocked if we had coaches coerce the girls into not pressing charges. You are asking for a Title IX full body cavity search.

I am really liking the job Mullen is doing so I hope he's squeaky clean...please.

Not sure I really understand this comment. Are you saying because he was from the West Coast he doesn't have the balls to stick it out?
Well it's a pretty well known fact that westcoasters are pussys but I don't think that's what he's saying at. I believe referring to the distance between a parent and their kid.

I'm sorry couldn't resist. Plus it's not like you're a true westcoaster. C'mon i'm pretty sure we're born in the same town.
No I’m not a true west coaster. It seemed like a swipe at me but I’m glad you recognized.
