We have heard that Steele asked multiple times to be moved to another room. We do not know if he said that JJ was a bad dude who assaults women, and that he didn't want to be anywhere near him, or if he just said they didn't get along well and that he wanted to move. That nuance makes all of the difference in whether the staff "screwed up" or not.

This is exactly what will be speculated on, and likely never known, which is good. Somebody mentioned earlier about all that DM has going on. He can't make immediate major changes for one player based on disagreements or an allegation of someone being a bad roommate. And this is all based on the premise that these complaints actually reached Mullen himself, which we don't know.

At this point, it's not about solving anything. But it would definitely be wise for Mullen (and Stricklin) to get in front of this as much as possible. Even just an empathetic tweet(deserved or not) would help dispel the narrative that rivals will use. UF and DM can still come out of this looking just fine. Even if the worst possibilities of timing and knowledge are true, if Steele and his family are content to move on, we should be supportive and change the perception. I'm a little surprised at the silence to this point, unless they're being advised to do so, which troubling in itself.

We will never know all the details of this event due to University privacy rules. Your speculation is no better than anyone else's speculation. Mullen is very busy with recruiting and spring practice and a million other duties and may have never been told about a suitemate transfer request.

Steele came and from appearances gave it a good effort. He has decided with his parents to do the portal thing. It's over. Everybody needs to live and learn and let it go. We will be just fine.

Sometimes stuff just happens. Good Luck to all of us.

Just as credible as a one-sided narrative by the Steele family.

Think I have to disagree with that. Credible source would be the father. Not credible source would be claimed insiders on 247. Not saying it isnt the case ... just saying it isn't credible (using your words) yet.

The same father that was praising Mullen to high heaven a week after the sexual assault?

Here is what was reported in the Gainesville Sun:

Florida freshman cornerback Chris Steele is transferring from the school. The former five-star recruit has entered his name into the NCAA transfer portal. Steele met with UF coach Dan Mullen on Wednesday night and informed him, a source close to the situation told The Sun.

The decision stems from a request Steele made to the staff during his first month on campus, the source said. He asked to be moved to a different dorm because he was uncomfortable rooming with quarterback Jalon Jones, his classmate.

The staff did not plan to move Steele until the summer, which upset Steele and his parents, according to the source.

So again, unless Steele's complaint about Jones was that the guy was in the habit of raping chicks in their room, it is very safe to assume that the coaches regarded it as nothing more than a personality clash that could be remedied by making a room switch in the summer, rather than disrupting other people's room assignments and causing controversy in the middle of the semester.

I'm far removed from the situation and can't say anything with absolute certainty in any of this. But at my age, with my background in law enforcement, I find it hard to imagine that the only "flaw" in JJ's character was a propensity for forcing himself on women. Admittedly that is a biggie, but to believe that he was a choir boy in every other respect is a stretch. If Steele is gone for good, so be it. But homesick or not, Momma dominated or not, the kid apparently raised what now appear to be some very justified red flags.

I'm 400 miles and 50 years removed from knowing what was going on in the minds of those involved. But a rewind of the locker room fiasco ("broken program") that took place several years is something to be avoided at all costs. We now have 3 recruits who have been involved in police incidents in just over a year - as a result of "problems" with females. Add the defection of one of the highest ranking recruits in several years and it all adds up to a very bad look. DM must get a handle on a growing sense of unease relating to thuggery of any type. I believe he can still do it, but the stupid has got to stop. I'm pulling for him, but the current situation is fraught with peril.

I’m still not sure that he’s not. I think we underestimate how much damage has been done to us over the last decade. With a solid roster, maybe we don’t take a kid who was kicked off his team in HS and dropped to a 3* because of character. And if we lose a 5* guy to transfer, it’s “oh well”. All of this is much worse because of where we’re at, and that really has little or nothing to do with Mullen. We still won 10 games, actually looked like a competent team and saw an uptick in recruiting. This hurts. But it doesn’t erase the good or mean we don’t have some positives to look forward to.

True, but very guarded optimism it about the best I can do at the moment. Time will tell.

Why would CS decide to leave AFTER JJ was already gone. At that point the source of his concern is gone, and he's got the whole dorm room to himself as it's too late in the semester for housing to bother moving someone else in.

Still too many missing pieces to the puzzle.

Lingering anger mixed with embarrassment? Who knows?

What Law meant to say is he loses his boner whenever anyone walks in on him and the Mrs.
It depends on whose Mrs it is.

in the words of the great philosopher Larry the Cable Guy, guns don't kill people, husband who come home early kill people.

From people in a 247 thread, Steele came in behaving like a diva. He was constantly in coaches/support staff ears complaining about this, complaining about that. He was very high maintenance. So maybe the coaches tuned him out a little bit. You know like in the story about the boy that cried wolf?
cried wolf about JJ being a scumbag and it turns out JJ is a scumbag? Lots of rumors there is another JJ incident. It seems unclear to me and I cant get better info.

Typical we didn't want him anyway-ism. that isn't the brightest bunch on that forum. They were the ones first alleging CS was also getting kicked out and had "his own Title IX" issue.

I agree with everything you wrote, except “it’s over”. It isn’t over unless and until he either announces that he is going somewhere else, or withdraws his name from the transfer portal.

Still don't understand how that matters. Corral was not coming once we got EJ. If he was in JJ's class I would understand, but he was not...

My real point was that passing on one kid "with problems," while falling in love with another kid with what appear to be bigger problems is, in hindsight, not good. To your point, Corral's presence MAY have obviated the need to take JJ in the first place - possibly. Pure conjecture of course, but not impossible. And although my recollection may be wrong, I was under the impression that DM was the one who pulled the plug on Corral. One way or the other, we all better be hoping EJ and AR pan out in the sweet by and by. Also, obviously my opinion of Corral's talent level and suitability for the RPO is not shared by everyone. And in fairness to DM, just because he appears to have been wrong in regard to JJ's "character" doesn't mean he was wrong about Corral. End of rant.
