No one is arguing hundred dollar handshakes. That’s happens at every power 5 school in America, I would presume.... No way to control some fan off the street or fat-cat alumni handing a kid some cash in a handshake. As for joker “cheating” (having dinner with a kid during the no contact period). He was immediately suspended, UF stopped recruiting that particular athlete, and he was subsequently fired/allowed to resign.

I can’t believe this is even an argument. Joker having dinner with a prospect, WHICH HE GOT FIRED OVER, when HOW MANY bama recruits are suddenly driving brand new cars? Or their high school dropout, single mother suddenly finds a high paying job in Tuscalusa, equipped with a fancy house... when she’s been living in a two bedroom apartment all her life and living on minimum wage and government subsidy “prior” to her son committing to bama.?.?. Come on, bro.

Thing is, I don’t even disagree with your premise. That UF is not squeaky clean. But the egregious, in your face, and the SEC and NCAA ain’t gonna do sh!t about it, breaking of the rules is not even in the same ball park! My origins premise was other teams have an advantage in facilities. No excuse for that. And as long as many of those same schools are also egregiously breaking the rules in recruiting, while we are seemingly “trying” to play within the rules.... well that puts us behind on two fronts.

I miss the SOS days when we could say, let’em cheat. We’ll kick their ass anyway! But the UF brand is not what it once was and we are now way behind on many fronts. First step, I think, is breaking ground on new facilities immediately. Which ain’t happening. And don’t half-ass it. Go ALL out and spare no cost. Which we also know ain’t gonna happen... until something major changes, we’re gonna be hard pressed to bring in Top 3-5 classes every year, which is what we all want to see.

You're right. We don't cheat. We're the cleanest program in the country....

What good is a car if you arent allowed to drive it? Hopefully his Mom enjoyed it!
I don’t even think he finished his spring semester. I’m sure his mom drove it everyday. Most of these kids go through all of this for their families. So I doubt he cared much at all.

Auburn lost a 3-star DT from Georgia yesterday (de-commit). They are ranked 29th overall right now w/ only 6 commits....so, it could be worse (for us)!
I'm not proud of being the next Arkansas or Auburn.

Odom and who else?
Speculation is Canion but that can change. I would like for it to be Braun but I think he takes all 5 visits but decides before the end of the summer. Maybe Robinson who has committed to 'Bama.

We're still in it for EJ Smith but he's probably going to drag it till ESD or NSD.

Also Marlon Martinez who very recently visited LSU and was thought of favoring them has postponed his decision date. We were recruiting him pretty heavily and was rumored to be leading for his commitment after he visited us. It seems that neither we nor LSU accepted his commitment. We also are rumored not to have accepted Ethan Pouncey's commitment. I guess we have higher rated players on our board that we are pursuing.

My original question is still the same: Isn’t it a rule violation to offer lodging to a recruit on an “unofficial” visit ?

I never wanted to believe the “bagman” angle, but in listening to my friend it’s obvious they are alive and well, just not as much as they are at other schools.

We had a talk today about a conversation he had with a street agent, a dude that knows all the recruits. He said one of the asst coaches told Keyvone Lee that he was growing into linebacker size and that scared Lee. That was communication, just not good communication.

Most of the SEC wants him as an LB.

We could use both of those guys in the class. Not sure why we'd turn down a commitment from either of those players - we have zero OL's committed and we need 4, we have one CB from Texas (who could easily bail/de-commit, which is common for these early out of state kids)....and we just lost Steele.

Here's an interesting read from the 247 Clemson page regarding WR X. Henderson (CJ's brother):

— For as settled as Clemson's Class of 2020 seems to be heading into the summer months, especially after upcoming back-to-back announcements this Friday and Saturday, I only have three prospects (outside of Myles Murphy and Kobe Pryor) forecasted to Clemson on the Crystal Ball: wide receivers E.J. Williams and Xzavier Henderson and defensive end Jordan Burch.

I probably feel more confident about Williams landing in the class than Henderson, whom I reported last week drew a recruiting visit from Jeff Scott. The Tigers are primarily battling the Gators there. It'll be interesting to see if the recent unrest in Gainesville affects Henderson's recruitment, although his older brother, C.J., being a starting defensive back on the team + proximity from home are helping Florida's case. Plus, Henderson doesn't plan to make a decision until after his senior season. Clemson could be done recruiting the position by then.

@Swamp Donkey here's some good info on kids HS weights/sizes:

The evaluation trends that shaped the 2019 NFL Draft

The 2019 NFL Draft saw six offensive linemen and seven interior defensive linemen (six if you consider Rashan Gary an Edge) in the first round.

  • The OL averaged 253 pounds as high school prospects, with none eclipsing 300 pounds. 4 of the 6 were 240 pounds or less.
  • 7 of the 9 interior DL were under 300 pounds in high school.
  • The two DL over 300 pounds – Dexter Lawrence (327) and Jerry Tillery (308) – were already highly athletic. Lawrence ran a staggering 5.03 second 40-yard dash with a 4.61 second shuttle, while Tillery posted a 5.05 second 40 and 4.69 second shuttle.
  • The 9 high school shuttle times we have from the OL/DL averaged 4.65 seconds with 4.73 being the highest.
This isn’t a one-year fluke. The last twelve first round offensive linemen (2017-2019 Drafts) were under 300 pounds in high school.

Jonah Williams was the heaviest high schooler of the six offensive linemen taken in the first round, checking in at 296 pounds. Williams was highly athletic relative to other top offensive linemen prospects in the 2016 recruiting cycle–with a 5.14 second 40-yard dash and 4.66 second shuttle. By the time the draft rolled around, Williams was the least athletic of the first round linemen. The Folsom (Calif.) native stepped in and started at tackle for Alabama as a true freshman, sliding from right to left after his sophomore season. Williams should be the classic example of a ready-to-play prospect, as opposed to the heavier, less athletic prototype.

The idea that gaining weight at the college level diminishes athleticism is a complete misnomer. It’s gaining weight during the formative high school years that’s an issue.

The trends continue when you broaden the sample to picks taken in the first three rounds:

  • Of the 30 OL/interior DL taken in the first 3 rounds, just 6 were over 300 pounds as high school prospects.
  • The OL averaged 279 pounds as high school prospects.
  • The average shuttle (of 6 times) was 4.70 seconds, with 4.90 being the highest.
  • The DL averaged 287 pounds. The average shuttle (of 7 times) averaged 4.63 seconds.
  • Linemen as a total group averaged 282 pounds with a 4.66 second shuttle. The highest shuttle of the group was 5.01 seconds (UCF/Cowboys DT Trysten Hill).

OL runs counter to @Swamp Donkey but DL supports him well. Need some big HS horses out of HS on DL or your already at a disadvantage.
