Another sad passing by a class act who will always be remembered (unfairly in my view) for the ball going through his legs in the ‘86 World Series. While it was a bad error, it was one of many mistakes that cost Boston the series. Buckner had a long career, amassing over 2700 hits, and was always described as a true professional.

I remember second-guessing McNamara on a few things during that game. One of them was leaving Buckner in defensively with a 2-run lead in the 10th. You don't often see a defensive sub at first base, but Buckner was visibly hobbling. He walked out to his position with a stiff leg like a pirate. It's a miracle he got down on that ball at all and it was predictable that it would go through his legs. They had other people who could have played there, Don Baylor hadn't even entered the game and Dave Stapleton was an effective utility man who could have played there. I also think McNamara pulled Clemens way too early and left Calvin Schiraldi, who was obviously laboring, in way too long. McNamara should have been the guy taking the blame for that lost series.

And made the same mistake in game 7, pulling Bruce Hurst for a pinch hitter when Hurst had a 3 run lead and was pitching a shutout.

And guess who he pulled him for? None other than Calvin Schiraldi, who proceeded to take the loss by giving up 3 runs in a third of an inning.

McNamara sucked as a manager in several spots, career under .500. That's who to blame for 1986, but the idiot Bah-stun fans can't comprehend that.

None of em even care right now, they’re all glued to the Stanley Cup Finals.

I thought that scene would have been funnier if someone yelled "Hey that's Buckner" after he caught the baby and then they turn into an angry mob and chase him down the street.

Dan Patrick said this morning that McNarmara didn't make a defensive switch because he wanted Bucker to be in the game and on the field when Boston recorded the final out and won the World Series. If true, a sentimental decision cost them Game 6 (although they still could have won Game 7).

Just as bad in my mind was Dusty Baker's decision to take out Russ Ortiz with a 5-0 lead late in Game 6 of the 2002 Series....Giants versus Angels. He made things worse by giving Ortiz the ball as a souvenir as he walked off the mound, assuming the Giants would hold on to win their first Series since 1954. It was an egregious violation of baseball protocol and something seen by the Angels dugout. Of course they were riled up and rallied to win Game 6 and then Game 7 and the Giants had to wait until 2010 to finally win a Series.

There was lots of great interaction on the old Gator board during that Series as former UF star David Eckstein was playing for LA and everyone (except me) was pulling for the Angels.
