Us- It isn't on the same level as Get out. That however is no insult given that Get out is a near perfect movie.
It's similar in that there are things that catch your attention throughout the movie that perhaps you don't think
much of, but make more sense as the story is told. My wife doesn't care for horror flicks, so when she had
to work on Good Friday I figured it was a good time to check it out at the theater. The movie starts off quite
well. About 45 minutes into it , it almost feels like you have it all figured out, and the remaining hour and ten just
feels like it's going to end how you expect. At least for me that ended up not being the case, and I enjoyed
the movie even more after it ended than perhaps I did throughout. You won't be disappointed by this one. It's a solid A.

Stan and Ollie - Historical account of the last day of Laurel and Hardy. Me and the wife caught this on demand out of curiosity. My father in law is an old soul and is a huge fan of theirs for some reason so we were interested in all of it. The movie itself follows their relationship on their last tour and some feelings they are dealing with due to a broken business deal years before and trying to get one last movie financed as they fall out of favor. While not completely historically accurate it was ok. The two leads play the parts well, but the movie overall is a snorfest. I was counting the minutes until they just hurried it along and ended. The other disconnect I think we had from it is both of us don't understand how popular they are. While back then I'm sure it was comic gold by the standards in which we grew up we just don't get it. I'm sure some of our older posters might enjoy a little more. That being said I will give it a 5/10.

I'm curious how old you are, now. I'm near 50, but I'm a bit odd and was really into the older b&w stuff.

I'm 37. Don't get me wrong I have watched all kinds of tv and movie wise from all different time periods. This type of comedy is just one that was a little lost on me, but at the time I can see it being a big hit. I think at some point I will fall into that category as well when it comes to newer comedies compared to the ones from the 70's, 80's and 90's. Now a days I feel like they really have to try to create the laugh where as in some of the really good comedies from back then it was more organic with the comic pulling it off with tone and facial expressions even when it should have just been a normal line.

When I was a kid in the 70's into early 80's, and we still had basically 7 VHF and UHF channels combined (including CBC out of Windsor), Laurel and Hardy was a "show of last resort" if it was on at some obscure time. However, every Sunday morning, our local ABC channel ran an Abbot & Costello movie. I loved almost all of them back then, and if we didn't have so many damn choices now, I'd love to watch them again. I heard this on the radio today regarding "percent of households that watched..."... Game of Thrones, which is ubiquitous in society right now, has a peak viewership of about 3% of the total US households. By comparison, at it's peak, I Love Lucy and a peak of 70%!!! By the way, for me anyway, I Love Lucy, while sometimes funny, was another "Show of Last Resort"... much like Daktari or Kimba the White Lion.

Holy crap- that is much higher than I thought although not a lot of choices back then either.

What’s also funny is - back in the day...
Comparing the fact that they couldn’t mention the ‘p’ word (pregnant) or show couples sleeping in the same bed.
And then there’s GOT which shows most everything.
We’ve come a long way.

Captain Marvel (2019): Saw this Friday in preparation of Endgame. Came into this movie with average expectations, thinking this is much like Captain American: The First Avenger just a movie to set up her role for Endgame. The movie ended up being a bit better than expected, with some mild plot holes that were easy to over look. The music was my favorite part of the movie. The movie was a fun watch and set up a pretty decent character to the MCU. I give it a solid 7/10.

Last weekend was a long weekend of putting together some furniture so saw a few movies while working and two in theatres:

John Wick 3 - Parabellum (2019): I have stated before I'm a huge fan of the world built up in the first two John Wick movies, and this film was supposed to go further into that world. It was disappointing. The movie time is roughly two and a half hours and the middle 40 minutes didn't make sense after the whole story unfolds felt in the end like a waste of time. Winston might be my favorite character in the series at this point followed very closely by Charon. The whole John Wick story has become meh. The action sequences are still pretty top notch except in my opinion as Mrs Dougie called it the video game boss fight with the ninja that felt very Matrix: Reloaded long for the sake of being long (though very talented martial artists). It was still a fun watch, but not as fun as the other two and should have waited for streaming or Blu-ray release. I give it a 6/10.

ThreatMatrix Matrix: no boobs or bush in this film.

Bad Times at the El Royale (2018): I was excited to see this movie and was glad when it popped on HBO. The wife and I got some good Chinese food (it does exist) and watched this. The movie starts off excellent with solid actors and great premise. Then the story unfolds, starting off very interested and devolving into something that climaxes in almost a paint by numbers way that really dumbs down the initial idea. Their was an unnecessary amount of Jennifer Hudson singing, some of which perfectly fit the plot some of it that felt like time filling. The acting from John Hamm and Jeff Bridges was excellent, and the rest of the case was good but not great. I'm glad I wait until it was "free" on HBO, I give it a 5/10.

ThreatMatrix Matrix: one boob scene in a flash back in the background.

Secret Life of Pets 2 (2019): My daughter loved the first one and I felt it was enjoyable. The movie starts out showing Duke and Max's lives and how they have changed with the change in their owners lives. The group of pets felt more spread out in this movie, so there are a lot of stories that are spread out through out the movie, and it wasn't as cohesive as the first one. The movie was still fun for what it is, and my daughter and her best friend giggled and laughed through out the movie. I don't think it was anywhere close to the first movie, but still a fun time 7/10.

ThreatMatrix Matrix: no boobs/bush you nasty freaks

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-verse (2018): Little late to the party on this one have owned it and daughter has watched if over and over since it came out, but didn't watch until I she wanted to and I was building stuff in the same room. Might be the most interest Spider-Man movie I've ever seen. The different multi-verse versions of Spider-Man are interesting to say the least, and I knew of all but one before the movie (daughter loves her some spider-gwen) but it was fun to see them on the screen. The art style is top notch and the story is solid. I give it a solid 8/10.

ThreatMatrix Matrix: You degenerates looking for cartoon boobs.... damn you Urg.

The Meg (2018): Deep Blue Sea meets worse writing. The wife loves shark movies, especially of the horror variety. This is a movie you could feel the fact they had a lot of Asian market money to help fund it due to the multiple references. The story is basically Jason Stathan is a rescue diver (?) and is brought it to save a group of scientists who found a big ass shark in deepest depths of the ocean. Upon the rescue they the allowed a path for the shark to follow them up to the shallower waters for a brief moment by warming the waters. Then shark attacks and a lot of stupid stuff occurs. The movie is dumb but you know what you are getting into when you are picking it. It's entertaining enough for what it is 6.5/10.

Threat Matrix Matrix: no boobs/bush... but could have used some.

Geostorm (2017): This is hot garbage for the sake of hot garbage. Man creates weather creating satellite, something goes wrong. The government calls in the guy who helped to develop the satellite to fix it. They find it's a government conspiracy. A lot of global warming and government conspiracy stuff through out the film. It's bad, not Dolemite bad... but bad. It is entertaining in a bad movie kind of way but I could have gone my whole life without seeing it and been perfectly fine. Mrs Dougie found it a little more entertaining, but she watched it because it was bad. I like Gerard Butler think he has had some enjoyable films (300, Law Abiding Citizen), but this was another one of his really hammy parts that was just funny to watch. I give it a 3/10.

John Wick 3 - Parabellum

Thanks. I tend to wait for 'free' on these and will again.

Bad Times at the El Royale

Disappointing to hear. I was looking forward to this. I'll still kill a night sometime when it is 'free'.

Not hitting on her, but your wife sounds like a good movie buddy to me if she's willing to watch bad because it's bad.

We both love movies, and now the daughter is a little older we are able to see more movies. She is great to watch movies with, especially low expectation movies. Her commentary during Chips was epic.

Bad Times is like a Quentin Tarantino movie that isn’t a QT movie. I’d say a 6/10. Reminded me of the movie Savages. Where you really expected something great and it was just okay.

Chris Hemsworth is hilarious in it.

take out the extra 20 minutes of Hudson singing for no reason, it might have been a 6 in my opinion. Savages is a good comparison for the third act, but not the first two. It as like two different movies.

Speaking of really disappointing movies, I watched Serenity on the airplane. The movie’s trailer looked so promising. I mean it has Matt M, Diane Lane, Anne Hathaway, et.al.

It’s pretty short. Maybe 1h 45min. Short by today’s standards.

It tries to get clever with its “twist”. And it goes from an interesting movie to maybe one of the worst movies I’ve ever seen.

The twist is so bad. I mean really stupid.

I give it 2/10.

Description of Willie Wonka meets matrix is accurate nearly to a fault. Today’s cgi makes it much better. There is a billion references to old stuff, too many to catch, but it makes it so everyone will catch something somewhere. I do have to say the second quest in the shining was delightful with the mix of old film, cgi, and new actors. Video game action romp with a bit of romance (minimal) and story telling makes it a little better than expected. Not winning awards, but not a waste of time. 6.5/10
