Looking back at the coaching search with the benefit of hindsight, was CDM the best available candidate? I would have to say yes.
(FTR - I wanted Frost. I still think he would have done very well at UF, but I don’t think there was anyway he was going to turn Nebraska down. )
If he was going to turn Nebraska down, it wasn't going to be for UF. If CDM doesn't bring us back to championship level, maybe he will bring us to a point where we can hire a championship coach in the making.

If Chip woulda been hired by UF, CDM woulda likely went to UT resulting in 4 more horrible years for UF and both UT and UGA being better.

What kinda sick world would that have been?

You just watch your dirty ass mouth. This post actually made me physically angry. It forced an alternate reality into my head that almost gave me a panic attack. I really need to chill out on football

There's no way he was this bad at Oregon. My opinion is the NFL is where he wants to be. He's clearly in "eff it" mode and he needs to get his ass fired with cause.
And sucking in college is the way to get back to the NFL?

I think he is just fat and lazy and realized his gimmicky offense doesn't work anymore.

We have a well-deserved reputation for being the worst managed program in P5. Coaches know that when you come here, the answer will always be no for the staff and facilities necessary to compete.

It isn't. He's completely finished after UCLA fires him. What a lazy ****.

OX, I know you were his #1 fan in hopes that he would replace Butters, strictly b/c of the "buzz" it would create. Myself and many others had him #1 on our do not want list. It was amazing how diametrically opposed people could be over one person. But even you would have to admit that it is very fortunate that he did not end up here, whatever the reason.

All part of Foley‘s diabolical plan:

CDM returns us to respectability and stability but we hit a ceiling due to recruiting. Fans drive CDM off after 4 years of “pretty good”, fearing a Richt like run. Conversely, CK devalues himself at UCLA but can’t be fired because they can’t afford the buy out... for 4 years. Foley, knowing CK needed a humbling to return the fire that once made him great, advises that we hire a rejuvenated CK for pennies on the dollar to replace CDM. Contract is the cheapest for a HC in the SEC, making Vandy jealous.

2 years later, the first of many NCs roll in and Foley laughs as @FireFoley and @Swamp Donkey get committed. @oxrageous changes his moniker to “oxnoxious” and shoots the bird to all this site’s subscribers - bringing full circle his reconciliation with Franks.

As was I. The CDM hire was a huge letdown for me. Boy was I wrong.

Chip is a fvkin dumpster fire.

BUT I still think Frost will turn around Nebraska.
Yeah I wasn’t thrilled with the Mullen hire at all. Don’t mind being wrong about this one, though.

So there's still a chance?

The only negative from the whole episode was hearing Uf fans—and not just here—listening to whoever it was(Martin, I think) and a few twitter idiots and parroting the various lines as to why it was done but not announced. Everything from it interfering with his TV money, to us locking it up but not wanting him to come home from NH with us, to NFL protocol. These were grown men and women just lapping it up and speaking of it like it was gospel. It was embarrassing.

I thought we still had a chance up until the end, but was never buying all of that nonsense.

The UF brass got on a plane and went out to see Chip Kelly at least once, perhaps more than once. While it was obviously never a "done deal", it was far closer than some people here are acting like it was. Kelly is the one who ultimately backed out, not UF. I suppose we should thank him for that.

I was adamant that Kelly would never come here and then several here started to convince me he was. I thought the guy was a decent coach but I thought Frost was our main target. Then Mullens name came up and I was mad. Funny how things play out...

No I agree. We were obviously interested and so was he. But we clearly had an issue when we came back with an empty seat in the plane, and rather than acknowledging that it was still a work in progress, there was this mental gymnastics about when it could legally be announced, his prior contracts, etc. That’s what I’m talking about.

And to be clear, I thought the “there’s no chance” crowd was equally exhausting and ridiculous. It wasn’t some pipe dream either. His “playing UF” as it was deemed, screwed his actual current employer much more than it did us.

As you pointed out, we probably should thank him. The only negative for us that came from it is that it initially looked bad, and probably gave Mullen even more leverage in his negotiations, which was my complaint when the terms were announced. Otherwise, even if by total accident, Stricklin comes out looking great, especially given the noles’ choice.
