Will Sammon wrote an article (sub site) on Ja'Markis Weston today. Here are the highlights,
1. Weston didn't go to many camps period. Not only did he not go to a rivals or 247 type camp. He didn't go to many team camps. That alone will cause you to go unnoticed.
2. After evaluating Weston to see if they should keep the scholly offer, they loved his game.
Florida receivers coach Billy Gonzales visited Clewiston for a practice during the spring of 2018, a few months after the Gators’ new staff took over. Gonzales wanted to check out Weston, introduce himself and assess whether or not Florida should hang onto the commitment. He asked Garrett if he could watch 15 minutes of practice to study Weston’s movements.
Gonzales stayed for the entire two-hour practice.
“He just fell in love with him,” Garrett said.
3. As for how talented he is physically,
Weston is 6-feet-3 and 210 pounds with athletic genes. His mother still holds the Clewiston record for shot put. Weston’s time in the 100-meter has been clocked at 10.6 seconds, according to Garrett (Weston's coach). Before his senior year, he was bench pressing more than 330 pounds. He can squat more than 500 pounds.
“He’s a big, muscular kid who runs like a damn scat back,” Garrett said.
I don't know about the speed time. He didn't look that fast to me. Plus, we've seen skill guys run 4.3s but play 4.6. I've watched Weston. He doesn't look like he has the kind of speed his coach says he has. But, in Weston's defense, his QB could barely throw 10-15 yards. Weston was relegated to hitches, screens...ect. By the time he caught the ball, he was surrounded. We know he's tough because Weston was a 2-way player. He played DT as well.
