The finger-pointing has settled to a simmer in Tallahassee, but it's going to take several years of respectable finishes to put Florida State back in favor of the national media.

SEC Network host and ESPN college football analyst Paul Finebaum torched the Seminoles this week when asked where he'd place Texas and Florida State in the national hierarchy of programs behind Alabama, Clemson and other elites.

“I don’t think FSU is a (destination job)," Finebaum said on Thursday's David Glenn Show. "If you look at schools who have crashed and burned in recent years, FSU would be the poster child. And there’s a great debate on what happened, because it has not been every long. In fact, it’s only been two years since FSU entered the season No. 3 in the country about to play the biggest preseason game — what I mean by that — the biggest opening weekend game we’ve ever seen (vs. No. 1 Bama).

"I don’t know because I'm not down there whether the criticism is deserved on Jimbo Fisher. Willie Taggart to me is not the right coach. He has shown me absolutely nothing. From playing from national championships everywhere under Bobby and Jimbo, now they’re a program trying to get back to a bowl game.”

Finebaum didn't place all of last season's disaster on Taggart's shoulders, however. Fisher left the program barren in several areas and the Seminoles' new coach felt the brunt of it. Depth at quarterback and the along the offensive line lacked and FSU was in the middle of a talent development tailspin despite success in recruiting with one of the nation's most talented rosters overall.

"He left willingly, but I wonder if Jimbo Fisher's life at Florida State would be like this today,” Finebaum said. "Because the next year, which was last year, they were going to fall off a cliff. He was losing favor. He made a good decision (to leave).”

Earlier this year, Orlando radio host Mike Bianchi urged Finebaum not to bail on FSU's current regime just yet.

"He didn't exactly take over a team that was in great," Bianchi told Finebaum. "I'm going to give Taggart enough time to at least get the right quarterback in there. I don't think anybody is ready to say Willie Taggart is not the right guy there."

The Seminoles struggled on offense last season en route to missing a bowl game, finishing 103rd nationally in total offense and 113th in scoring (21.9 points per game). Bianchi pointed to Taggart's offseason coaching hires and the need to have patience as reasons he can foresee improvements.

Willie Taggart's reputation as some sort of offensive guru or genius was overstated, otherwise why would he have bailed out on calling the plays midway through the season,” Bianchi said. "Can you imagine Josh Heupel giving up the play-calling halfway through his first season at UCF? Or Dan Mullen? No.

"That doesn’t mean Taggart can’t recruit well and become a good head coach."

Phil Steele has FSU as his #3 surprise team -- and is bullish on them as a whole for this season, though the stack ranking of them was still around 30 overall. It was surprising to see such optimism from Steele about them -- gives me hope The Thriller can stick around Tally for a while if he can give FSU similar hope.

The last line gave it away. What evidence has anyone seen that Willie can recruit well at FSU? If they give him a full four years there, it will take at least three more years for the next guy to fix it (and that’s best case scenario for them).

Athlon has FSU and Tennessee improving a lot based on returning players in their formula but I think it just means they are likely to have maybe 2 more wins than the previous season not that they will actually be that good.

I think in their formula Tenn, FSU and LSU were the teams likely to be better in comparison to us relative to last season (doesn't mean they will be near us in reality except LSU). KY was projected to have at least 2 more losses than last season I think.

Paul Finebaum probably didn’t pick up any new fans in Tallahassee with his recent comments on the state of the Florida State football program.

In a recent appearance on “The David Glenn Show,” which airs throughout ACC states North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia, Finebaum called FSU the “poster child” of recent crash and burn programs in college football.

“I don’t think FSU is a (destination job),” Finebaum said. “If you look at schools who have crashed and burned in recent years, FSU would be the poster child. And there’s a great debate on what happened, because it has not been very long. In fact, it’s only been two years since FSU entered the season No. 3 in the country about to play the biggest preseason game — what I mean by that — the biggest opening weekend game we’ve ever seen (against No. 1 Alabama in Atlanta).”

The FSU faithful debate whether blame for the program’s decline from national championship contender and preseason top-5 to missing a bowl game in 2018 (after barely making one in 2017) falls more on Jimbo Fisher or Willie Taggart. Fisher left for Texas A&M before the Seminoles’ 2017 season finale. In Taggart’s first season, FSU posted its first losing record (5-7) in more than 40 years despite having one of the country’s most talented rosters. Finebaum isn’t sure it’s fair to blame Fisher.

“I don’t know because I’m not down there whether the criticism is deserved on Jimbo Fisher,” the SEC Network host added. “Willie Taggart to me is not the right coach. He has shown me absolutely nothing. From playing from national championships everywhere under Bobby and Jimbo, now they’re a program trying to get back to a bowl game.”

The ESPN analyst opined that Fisher got out at the right time.

“He left willingly, but I wonder if Jimbo Fisher’s life at Florida State would be like this today,” Finebaum said. “Because the next year, which was last year, they were going to fall off a cliff. He was losing favor. He made a good decision (to leave).”

I don’t know if people even think about what they’re saying/writing with this. Nearly the entire argument some of these same people were making for why we shouldn’t be overly critical of the noles’ ‘17 season was the loss of their difference maker QB in the opener.

Suddenly in 2018, he was terrible. Even the “fit” argument is a joke. I saw nothing from a system standpoint that Francois was just unable to do, like Leak in 2005 or JB in ‘10. The QB was the least of their concerns last year. The confusion, disorganization and lack of coaching was the problem.

I’m no Francois fan, but I hope he kills it at FAU this year while the noles send out their stick figure behind that putrid OL.
