Here’s a good article breaking down Tyree Appleby’s game.

What Cleveland State Transfer Tyree Appleby Could Do For The Gators | GatorCountry.com

When word came out that Florida was in touch with Cleveland State transfer Tyree Appleby I went into a deep dive to see what makes the Horizon League star so talented and desired by the Gators as well as by the host of other high major teams to contact him.

What I found was an extremely crafty scorer with a feel for the game that allows his 17 points per game to feel effortless. The way he zips around the floor as the fastest player on the court is mesmerizing and the willingness he shows to distribute the basketball is a bit surprising for someone of his scoring potency. Here’s some of the best stuff I found going through the film.

Thanks Bart. Good to read. Straightforward process between straightforward coach, player, family and welcoming Gator guys, all ready to play. I'm ready to cheer. Lucky us, we've got a big-wins season of football, then basketball.
Hey! those seasons overlap. Go Gators!

I’m interested to see the rotation this year considering we have 5 centers and 1 legit 4 (K Johnson).

Do we steal minutes at the 4 with Lewis or do we go big with a combo of Blackshear and Gak/Bassett/Payne?

Would prefer an extra 3 or 4 rather than a guard, but I agree with the rest. Whites cookin on the trail and with transfers.
Remember, we've got duruji. And we're in on a top 50 wing for 2020. This would be a very good pick up. Huge need. We don't know what we have in glover.

Sucks big time to lose Stokes, complete roster change will be fun to see though. Tones of talent and expectations

We’ve got a solid coach who has turned over the roster in a good way. All the transfers were somewhat expected and appropriate. I liked Ballard more than most here but he wouldn’t get the minutes and he knew it. Only other one that was remotely surprising to some was Stone. He’s an incredibly good kid but hampered by injuries and never contributed consistently. He was very close to Hayes and Allen and with them leaving it made it easier for him to get closer to home.

Coach White did what many said he couldn’t do....stack the roster with talent. I would not be at all surprised to see him in another elite 8 (or better).

I like Stokes, but he couldn’t even break into regular playing time last year. Hopefully he finds success elsewhere.

Just out of curiosity. Why does it suck big time to lose stokes? If he couldn't crack the rotation in last years front court, he was never going to.

He had lost a lot of weight this offseason and was our clear #2 C, probably the starter next year and is a gifted scorer

I could see Basset playing the 4 spot.

I look at new guys on this roster this way:

2019-20 players: Blackshear, Lewis, Mann, maybe Payne

Future players: Duruji, Glover, Jitoboh, maybe Payne and now maybe Appleby

Blackshear is a one year guy. Lewis might be a one year guy. Nembhard might be a two years guy. So White has positioned himself well for future roster turnover, if it happens.

Right, and if KJ comes back we should be set. I’m pretty confident in the articles I’ve read and stats/film he put out that glover will be pretty solid. That said, maybe I’m just drinking the kool aid.

If Glover struggles, Nembhard and Mann leave, then yes we will definitely need two more guards.

Agreed. He’s got a decent shot that he’ll need to continue to develop, and he’ll need to work some in his athleticism as well. But I do see him playing some 4.

it is sad and a failure at least in part on UF's part whenever a player transfers. Now maybe if UF takes a flier on a player without any other power 5 offers and they part ways because the player decides not to be a bit player for his whole career it is not a failure, but otherwise somehow the staff and the player did not click and the potential we all saw when the kid signed was not met. To me and apparently LeeforThree at is the case with Stokes.

Bassett's only shot in my view is if Payne is so raw he can not be put on the floor. I see the minute distribution particularly in March something like:

PG: Nembhard (30), Mann (10)
SG: Locke (20), Mann (20)
SF: Lewis (30), Locke (10)
PF: Johnson (30) Payne (10)
C: Blackshear (30), Payne (10)

Now maybe someone else like Bassett or Gak can cut into the minutes of the 4/5s. Maybe despite the rankings Jitoboh is better than Payne and gets those minutes. If Glover shows he can be trusted with the ball and trusted to hit FTs, then he might get some minutes when UF is trying to close out a game with a lead.

Will Sammon published an article today on Kerry Blackshear. I loved this quote from KB on Lewis,

Blackshear was especially enamored with Lewis.

“His maturity is crazy,” Blackshear said. “I just think back to what I knew or what I thought I knew when I got to school, and he’s just a person who is ahead of the game. He has a clear-cut depiction of who he wants to be, and I feel like it’s something where we could complement each other well on a very good team.”

I believe this decision was all Stokes and his “handlers”. Sure Coach was frustrated with the conditioning and injuries but I doubt he was processed. This was a personal decision after seeing the handwriting on the wall. He was destined to limited minutes and was not willing to accept. He’s good enough to start somewhere and that is what he’s after.

Improving your roster comes with a price. 2nd tier players sometimes move on. It’s good for us and quite frankly...it’s good for them.

Sure, I was not suggesting this was a processing a kid out. It still is a failure in part on UF to develop Stokes. It is also the bad luck of getting injured your SR year of high school. And sure Stokes is ultimately responsible for how hard he works, how good a shape he is in etc.

I agree it is good for players that have not found a spot in the rotation. I also agree it is good for UF's depth. None of that does not mean it is not sad when a kid we were quite happy to have sign with UF transfers out.

All along (prematurely?) I had expectations that Stokes would perform well. Maybe the deficit that injury put him in, he just couldn't climb out of. I can't think of any Gators that I'm glad to see depart. Smartly, Coach White has collected top notch newcomers. How fast can they learn? How fast can White and Pinkins teach? I'm expecting a top notch team. Their biggest challenge will be to get White excited?
