Alonso is in the running for Rookie of the Year, National League. He won player of the week last week.

"Alonso, has broken the Mets record that's held since 1983 (36 years) Not yet halfway through the season, Alonso has crunched more homers (27) than any other Mets rookie in history.

Alonso blasted his 27th last week, when he batted .427/.548/1.042 (10-for-24) with 7 runs, 3 doubles, 4 homers and 8 RBIs. His home run Sunday broke Darryl Strawberry's record but also extended his NL rookie record for home runs before the All-Star break. He's one shy of Mark McGwire's all-time record for most HRs by a rookie before July 1 (28 in 1987)." Go Gators!

Awesome! Seeing the Strawberry reference, I can’t help but say that I hope PA doesn’t let early success go to his head or get caught up in the party lifestyle that ends badly. I hope he represents Gator Nation well for a long and prosperous career!

I believe he failed to earn an allstar invite but, may still make it into the HR derby. That may have changed in the last week.

He had to battle a really poor batting practice pitcher. His cousin who was a utility operations manager could not hit the strike zone, no less than the 1 foot circle he should be throwing in. Pete battled through it with a lucky first round draw but his cousin and him stepped up in the last round.

I hope he has a long and prosperous MLB career, but can we sign him to a future UF Baseball coaching staff position already?

Yeah. Would have been interesting to see how many was left the park if he had someone grooving that middle in every pitch.

Earned a cool $1mm.

He's doing a great job of endearing himself to the NY fans.

Pete Alonso earned more for Home Run Derby win than he will entire season

Pete Alonso earned more for Home Run Derby win than he will entire season

New York Mets rookie slugger Pete Alonso has hit 30 home runs in his All-Star campaign.

And on Monday night, he hit 23 to outlast worn-down Vladimir Guerrero Jr. in the final round of the Home Run Derby. In doing so Alonso won a $1 million bonus, which just so happens to be nearly double the base salary of $555,000, the league minimum, he'll earn with the Mets this season.

The 24-year-old said he will donate 5% of the winnings to the Wounded Warrior Project and 5% to the Tunnel to Towers.

Alonso is the second rookie to win the derby, following Aaron Judge in 2017. He's also the first Mets player to win the derby outright.

The first basemen has been one of the few positives for the struggling Mets in the first half, ranking top five in the National League in 14 offensive categories. He has a .280 average, 68 RBI and a 1.006 OPS.

“I’m living a fantasy right now," Alonso said. "I’m sure I sound like a broken record, but I feel like the luckiest guy in the world. I’m just so happy to be here.”

Guerrero hit 91 homers on the night, including a record 29 in the opening round, and arguably stole the show. But Guerrero eventually ran out of gas in the last round following an epic semifinal matchup against Dodgers outfielder Joc Pederson that featured three tiebreakers.
