A couple of good things from Sammon’s recent article,
1. A couple weeks ago before camp started, Hevesy left the room the offensive line was occupying after a meeting concluded. When he returned 45 minutes later while on his way to a staff meeting, Hevesy saw his group just exiting the door. He asked what they were doing, and Buchanan told him, “A couple of the younger guys wanted to go through the installation, get ready for camp, so we just stayed in there.”
2. When asked about defensive leaders who have emerged since last year, defensive lineman Elijah Conliffe interrupted the question with one of his own.
Are you talking about Kyree?
Yes. I guess so. At least, now we are …
Campbell’s path toward becoming a recognizable leader was similar to Buchanan’s. He was a three-star prospect who didn’t play much until securing a starting job two weeks into last season. Defensive coordinator Todd Grantham said Campbell ended up playing more because of his toughness, characteristics and intangibles. Campbell said he was reluctant at first to lead, but his ascension coincided with his knowledge of the defense increasing, which resulted in more playing time, making for an easier transition.
The burly Campbell is the type of person who listens to questions and thinks before answering them. He’s articulate, engaging and inviting. He says he wants to see teammates succeed, and his actions indicate he means that.
