I know some of you will be thankful, me on the other-hand will pray for a speedy recovery

Gators lose McWilliams, hurting in secondary

Florida Gators reserve defensive back C.J. McWilliams will miss the 2019 season with a ruptured Achilles tendon, the latest blow to a secondary that has lost several players in recent months.

Gators coach Dan Mullen on Tuesday confirmed McWilliams suffered the injury on a non-contact play in practice. McWilliams appeared in nine games last season -- starting two -- and recorded 16 tackles and four pass breakups. He was in the rotation at Florida's "Star," or nickelback position.

"It was early in practice, planted and drove and felt the pop," Mullen said. "It's a shame."

Earlier this summer, Florida reserve cornerback Brian Edwards announced he would enter the transfer portal and landed at Central Michigan with former Gators coach Jim McElwain. Chris Steele, a top-100 defensive back recruit who enrolled early, transferred from Florida this spring and landed at USC. Gators nickelback John Huggins is absent from the team because of family reasons.

Mullen said Tuesday that three true freshman cornerbacks -- Kaiir Elam, Jaydon Hill, and Chester Kimbrough -- all would play this season. Florida opens the season Aug. 24 against Miami in Orlando, Florida.

Thin isn't even a good word to describe it...

We literally have no margin of error now. We need to find a grad transfer for depth. I don't care if it's another Mason Halter type kid. We need someone or we will be holding tryouts at DB

You can make the change yourself at the top.

I'm not disagreeing that we're thin. But we have two definitive starters who are as good as anyone in the country. And behind them, we may as well get some of the youth out there as we're going to need them next year most likely. I'd rather have Elam, and the other freshman taking their lumps but at least setting us up for a better 2020 secondary, than seeing McWilliams out there, with little chance of seeing any real improvement.

That said, I hate seeing it for him. I'd rather him not be anywhere near our 2-deep, but just for other reasons.

I heard he tore it after getting burned by every receiver he's ever tried to cover.
In all seriousness I hope he gets better soon. Go Gators!

If they go down like last year we are in deep trouble. Hopefully its later in the season if one does have something happen. We are already hurting at safety as no one is as good as Stewart was.

I agree we're in deep trouble. But as I mentioned above, I'm ok with throwing talented youth into the fire so they can take their lumps and be ready for next season. There will be some ugly moments, I'm sure. But I don't see any advantage to putting someone out there that will likely make just as many bad plays, yet isn't the future of the secondary.

Haden, Jenkins, VH3, QWilson, Tabor. All were called upon earlier than expected and all did fine due to their talent. I don't see Elam as any different from them, especially considering we won't face a real pass-happy offense until later in the season. Although, word on the street is Miami likes to use their TE out in space, so that may be something to watch.

Yeah, they are going to destroy us with TEs, so we don't worry about Elam. They are at least the second best team in the country. It's probably no reason to even to play.

Back to Elam, it's the easiest position on the field for a true freshman, especially when the DC plays almost 100% man.

You just don't understand what a devasting offense a guy who averages 85-90th in total offense brings.
Any chance you edited "we" to "they"? :snicker:
