Here’s my take on Emmitt.

When I was a kid, JL Williams was my first favorite player and I idolized the #22 jersey. So, at the Fan Day of ‘87, as an outspoken 6 year old who didn’t quite get the whole “players graduate/jerseys change” thing, I marched straight to him and asked him why he thought he could wear JLW’s number. He was great, spent a few minutes laughing with us and signed my fan. By the end of that day, I’d forgotten about everything and had a new favorite player.

For those of us in that generation, he WAS UF football. He was everything. When I watched him cry after the Aub game in ‘89, I cried. When he got hurt, it was like our whole world ended. He was that special. The bizarre part is that unlike many others who were the direct connection to the next generation, to me he was just an unexpected bright spot that kind of came out of nowhere, was awesomely special, and ultimately had no direct link to what followed. In that respect, he’s actually on one of the strangest stories in Gator history.

Of course, then he became a cowboy, embraced Irvin and the canes, forgot to mention UF in his HOF speech and has now been seen in a uga hat.

In short, he’s become the Tessio of Gator Nation. Not a bad guy, and did tons of good. But also has a tendency to get swept up in things and ultimately make the seemingly popular, yet wrong, decision.

I like the godfather comparison, but I think Emmitt was bigger than Tessio. He's more like Fredo and he broke my heart by embracing the Canes and Dawgs.

I didn’t like Emmitt putting on that hat either. However......................
All I know is that if you have kids you do a lot of stuff for them you don’t really want to do. If one of the top five football programs in the country wants my boy on their team, I might have to put that hat on. It’s just the way the recruiting game is played.
Thankfully I live in the NW (no way my boy goes to college in the south, unless it’s UF) and he’s not a football player but a basketball/baseball player (UF advantage on both accounts).
If my kid is good enough to play D1 baseball and gets a scholly to FSU.....I will be elated. If he got the same offer from UF and did that then I'd break his arms.

GATORS DON'T DESERVE DERISION FROM EMMITT

GATORS DON'T DESERVE DERISION FROM EMMITT

Larry Guest of The Sentinel StaffTHE ORLANDO SENTINEL

Pardon me, your E-ness, but UFlorida doesn't deserve the damaging backhand rendered by Cowboys star Emmitt Smith during Super Week. In one of the player interview sessions, Smith told Florida Today's Pete Kerasotis and several others with tape recorders he regretted going to Florida, suggesting he might have won the national title or a Heisman Trophy at run-oriented Auburn and lamenting a batch of letters with racial epithets from Gator fans when he left UF a year early.

"Every year I was there, there was some kind of controversy, some kind of dark cloud hanging over us. . . . It was pure hell down there. . . . I gave that university everything I could possibly give it." Well, not quite. Not his senior year of eligibility, and that decision, though publicly supported by new coach Steve Spurrier, resulted in the mail with racial overtones. "Said I was sorry. Cussed me out. Told me I would never make it in the NFL," Smith said of the Gator fan mail. Copies of the story, reprinted Monday by USA TODAY, has no doubt been mass-produced by rival recruiters and sent to UF prospects and their parents. Spurrier and the Gators deserved better from Smith.
I think over time he has matured and realizes there are bad people in this world especially when we see it everyday now on social media. I mean truly, if he hated the Gators would he let his son even visit here, much less put them in the top 5.

I agree with what you say. I don't think Emmit Smith hates the Gators. I think he loves the Gators but like any human being he has regrets sometimes and asks what might have been. I think sometimes he got upset with how things ended for him at Florida. There might be some bitterness that surfaces at times. I do think a more mature person in his situation would have just kept their mouth shut.

There was no gear just a hat and I'm sure he didn't bring it with him.
It amazes me that this erases all the yards all the touchdowns, rug burns and workouts he endured while representing the university of Florida. It's possible Hernandez is more popular on this board than he is. I truly hope his son signs elsewhere he can never measure up, just as Taylor never could. I can't see him going to Florida or Georgia so doubt it is an issue.
THe haters must have never seen him play. He was all we had for awhile after sanctions. And it was a joy to watch him. As much class as any player we ever had. That run personafied what was special about him. Vision and the ability to take a hit and use it as momentum in the opposite direction. And his ability to hit full speed in two steps it seemed.

When Jr. & Mrs. G. visited Ugly, there was a point on the tour where they get everyone to bark. At that particular moment, Mrs G. chose to study the provided campus map instead.
As we live in Ga., Ugly would have been a very inexpensive (relatively) option and we decided early on our kids could choose their college, so at one point we thought it was what he’d pick. We did advise him however that we would never wear any red & black gear. (Ultimately he chose wisely.) I guess Mrs. G is more proud of, and loyal to, her alma mater than Emmitt is.

I live in Alabama. My son just graduated from Bama and my daughter goes to Ole Miss. Shortly after our son picked Bama, the wife walks in to my office proudly displaying a Bama t-shirt she had just gotten me. My response, "I'll wear that when he straps on a set of pads and hits someone."

I go to Bama and Ole Miss games, usually associated with a parent weekend. I wear a neutral shirt and my Gator cap, I attach either a Bama Dad or an Ole Miss Dad button to side of the hat. After all, I do pay tuition there.:)

There's also a striking difference between those two programs and uga.

Take away the Zook era, and a 12-fumble noon kickoff sleepwalk, and OM may as well be Vanderbilt to us.

And as much as we may hate seeing the current run of Alabama, especially considering how it kicked off, the fact is they're not a rival in any way. I can remember leaving Legion Field and Atlanta as victors and being treated about as politely as can be by Tide fans. Admittedly, 2009 was a little different with some, and there will always be exceptions. But the only thing that as ever made us rivals is the stage and implications of many of our meetings since 1990.

Neither can compare to the bulldogs in what they've cost us, what they meant to Spurrier, the endzone rush, etc, etc. That's the part that people take issue with.

Btw, good story on the kids. Never would have imagined you as having college age children.

I’d say that’s the perfect protocol for the situation. Well done!

Guys,

Don't forget that during the 2006 NC game in Glendale, Emmitt went toe-to-toe with Eddie George... and was seen waiving a giant UF flag on the sidelines as we kicked their tail. He's a Gator... it just took a few years for the hard feelings to subside.

He never had any playmakers around him, and essentially, was the entire offense. And he still piled up yards and touchdowns at an incredible rate, despite the fact that every defense he played against stacked the line to stop him. He gave everything he had and left it all on the field. My dad took me to just about every game when I was a kid. I can recall to this day, watching Emmitt in amazement, as he he seemingly couldn't be tackled. It was equally as astonishing and electric as watching Tebow play.

The racist threats. The feelings of disrespect by SOS, for not trying harder to get him to stay for his senior season. It all took a toll. And when he left... he left disgruntled. IMO, it took him years to get past that stuff. But, past it he is. And, I have no doubt about his love for UF or his loyalty.

The UGA hat is nothing. It's to support his son. I'd do it, too. The love for your university can't come within a hundred miles of the love of your child. I'd wear an FSU jersey and a UGA hat with Tenn shoes... if it made my kid feel good. That's what being a parent is all about. And failing to mention UF in his HOF speech is a non-issue, as well. I'd be willing to bet that less than half of the inductees mention their college.

So get over it. He's one of the greatest Gators of all time. Had he had even a decent QB, and played his senior season under SOS, he'd had piled up a yardage marker that could never be touched. Remember, in all kinds of weather... we ALL stick together.

Thanks, Mrs Emmitt Smith.
Post a pic of Emmitt burning that Ugly hat and I'm sure all will be forgiven.

Seeing Eddie George playing a Gator Recruiter in Tim Tebow's movie was priceless.
