I guess I understand it, it just seems like an employee/landlord situation instead of a marriage.
I paid my wife rent for the first 5 or so years we lived together before I started working for her. Sometimes we would role play like tenant & landlord. She'd ask me where the rent was and I'd tell her it's down my britches why don't you try to find it? One day she told me "it's late"! So I broke into character, I usually played the part of the lowly Gardner or strapping young Handyman, ...then she told me "no, not the rent, I'm late and you better learn how to play the part of Daddy"......:lol2:

We are kind of a mix, but mostly pooled. My wife has separate bank and credit cards, but I do all of the finances and have visibility to it all.

I was primary breadwinner for most of our history but that has switched in the last few years. She sends most of her net to me and I use it to pay bills or save. I do part time contract/consulting, most of what I make goes to savings.

I've seen a couple of friends who keep totally separate finances. They are typically trying to game each other and hide what they get and what they spend. Not shockingly neither of them save hardly anything.

My late husband and I had "yours, mine & ours". I found out early in our marriage that he was a sloppy bookkeeper; thus, I took over paying bills & keeping the checkbook reconciled. When our sons graduated from college & were out on their own, we then had extra money & we each invested & had our own accounts which gave us freedom to purchase what we wanted without consulting each other. He bought a boat and I bought a couple of diamonds - it worked for us.

For all those married saps out there who fell into the trap buying the wife the "gift that keeps on giving": A Diamond, from the old commercials. I give you the "gift that keeps on taking": Divorce Papers!

Yep....the first time wasn't terrible for me as she was very fair. We split everything, savings, possessions, vehicles and sold a house to split the equity...
The second time I wasn't even married just a long engagement but I paid off tons of her debt, bought her a nice vehicle, and a lot of jewelry including a nice solitaire.....I was planning a trip out of town and got wind she was going to move out when I was gone. The night before I left I went into the bathroom where she took the ring off at night and put it in my pocket. I came out and told her if she had a place to spend the night I'd prefer she took her sh!t and got out right then....first thing she went for was the ring...:law::lol2:....

Sorry to hear that Crete, but you know the saying "Fool me once, shame on you, Fool me twice...". Hopefully you won;t try for a 3rd. Which is why I always said prostitutes/hookers are the way to go. You are not paying for sex, you are paying them to leave.

I'm happily married...but if things went south I doubt I'd ever do it again...maybe in my 70's?

I'm happily married too. The third time was the charm......The third time also has a net worth of 10X mine :lol2:. So I'm not trying to change spots on a Leopard like I've done in the past. The "third" also had the "Spawn Of Crete" so I figure anyone willing to do that is probably a keeper.....

My wife and I have an All In One mortgage on our house. That means our mortgage and checking account are combined, sort of like a home equity line of credit, but unlike a HELOC the bank can't just 'shut it down." We both have our pay direct deposited into the AIO account. What this does is keep the balance of the mortgage as low as possible every month but without losing access to our money. We will have the 30 year mortgage paid off this way in around 10 years.

We have an airline credit card that we use for pretty much all expenses. Most of the bills are on autopay so we don't even have to remember to pay them. We just pay the credit card bill every month and earn a ton of points.

We both still have separate accounts but in order to use them we transfer money from the AIO account into those accounts. It keeps us from going on spending sprees without noticing.

Whenever we buy something large I'm usually the one who negotiates the deal but we talk it over between us. She is the one who handles most of the monthly admin WRT paying bills, etc.

Why does a pilot need an "airline credit card"?
