Dumb idea, for what it costs to take a thousand small boats across you could donate the money to load a cargo ship. The seas are not going to calm right down so the crossing will take hours. I had my boat in Bimini 2005 when hurricane Ophelia came through We waited a few days to cross back, the crossing back was pure hell. It took us 10 hrs in those conditions and Freeport is a lot further.

I think the point is that when they get over there their small boats will allow them access to places that the big cargo ships can’t get to. A big cargo ship isn’t going to take emergency supplies straight to where they’re needed nor is it going to rescue people from the rooftops and things like that.

Sorta like the "Cajun Navy" in Katrina.

I should be losing power here soon. Ormond Beach

Hope you didn't lose power. I live in the unincorporated area to the west on the mainland and got little in the way of wind gusts and did not lose power, however, Spectrum (I have internet, phone & cable tv bundled) went out, but restored by around noon today.

Exactly
Plus if the roads are washed out how are supplies going to be transported. Small boats can pull right in.

Just checking in. Things were much calmer than what we were told they’d be. Hope everyone is ok.

Jacksonville was a total non-event

Edit...in-land. I live about 10 miles from the beach. Going to see a bunch of beach erosion but nothing like we got from Matthew and Irma damage-wise

I never lost power, so I can't complain. Some branches down in the yard and the lake is about a foot higher than it was, but other than that, it's been a non-issue. The other storms were worse.

I didn't lose power either, feel really lucky it worked out how it did. But dayam @ the Bahamas, that is hard to watch. I expect death toll there is going to double or triple.

So rebuild on man-made "islands" hugging the shore. When hurricane path alluded to coming their way, then have numerous tug boats pull the islands out of the path. Investigate this type of living style now that island construction is already successful. Okay, baby-steps. First build the most deluxe casino-show-halls on an"island-barge". Then haul that out of the hurricane path. Make the next "island" houze all post-hurricane rescue services. Haul it out of harms way, then navigate it back in once the storm is clear. Hire the Dutch architects firm that built islands for the super rich Arabs.

After the first squall the power never even flickered. I know some who lost power but I didn't and I'm on the river. I was expecting to wake up to a hot house but woke up with the a.c. and fan still blowing. I lost power for about a week after Irma and a few days after Matthew even though the tree damage was way worse after Matthew. Not complaining at all about Dorian missing us. Not at all

Water in the street in St Aug, water in yards stopped a few houses from me. Thoughts on hurricane preparations

1) don’t take advice from the person standing in the rain. If they aren’t smart enough to come in out of the rain, are they smart enough to give you advice?

2) if you have to go buy booze before a hurricane, were you prepared for life?

Stay safe SC

Dorian is about to meet me here in North Myrtle Beach. We've had a bunch of tornado warnings, 2 confirmed tornados in the area, 1 about a mile from me. So far only about 4 inches of rain. He should stay about 50 miles off coast when he passes about 3 this afternoon.
