Yes, most here wanted UF to back up the Brinks truck and pay whatever it took to get him. People were talking Saban money. I also remember how pissed everyone was that UF sent the A-Team out to meet with him and came home with no contract and no Chip Kelly on the plane. Folks were talking about all the egg on our face. Just imagine the egg on our face if we had hired that dude. We REALLY dodged a bullet.

Yep, our AD “couldn’t close the deal.”

Good thing, our AD is so cheap. People on here would have gladly paid 10Mil a year for him. Idiots!

So, in your opinion, Urbie gave it his all in 2010 and did not spend every waking moment auditioning his good friend Da Dazzler for his job?
After 2 NC's in 4 years, Meyer could have spent the entire year sitting naked on a cooler on the sideline eating pizza and I wouldn't have criticized him for it. He earned every cent of the money UF gave him.

Besides, Meyer would have already been gone if Foley didn't beg him to stay that final year for the transition. Also, for a guy who had supposedly mailed it in, he landed the #1 recruiting class in the entire nation.

Let go of your jilt. It's embarrassing.

I'll take that answer as a no.

I would have had some slightly higher regard for him if he HAD just walked way instead of pocketing another years salary and a million dollar bonus on his way to Columbus. Maybe we'd have gotten someone better than Muschump to replace him.

The man is as crooked as a dogs hind leg and I will never change that opinion.

If you feel that way, then you had better not recognize our 2006 and 2008 titles. Go on record right now denouncing them.

To be clear, few if any here were ok with the the way Meyer left, or his final season’s effort. However, at the risk of beating a dead horse, what I think you’re missing is that we wanted him to stay, not the other way around. Not only did it buy us time, it helped the perception so we didn’t just fall apart in recruiting. So to Ox’s point, anything we accomplished at all that last year was a gift because it shouldn’t have even been and was more or less a roster play that he aided with. If you think WM was bad, think about how much worse it would’ve been without the major pieces of Meyer’s 2010 class. He may never have had a .500 season.

And to your last statement, we weren’t landing anyone good as long as it was Foley deciding. He arrogantly zeroed in on one guy and that was it.

So again, I’m good with disliking Meyer. I just don’t consider his returning for 2010 to be the greatest reason. It honestly helped us tremendously. If you want to be mad, be mad at the guy whose job it was to find a coach but who instead spent an entire year “working on the Penske file”.

Counter argument: who’s to say we hire Muschamp in the first place if Meyer doesn’t stay an extra year? Maybe we don’t have a disaster like Muschamp and don’t lose a decade. Then again, trusting foley to make the hire...

If Muschamp hadn't been available, I am convinced Foley would have found someone even worse. And yes, that would have been possible.

When has Meyer ever shown an inclination to coast? The guy's hard-wired to win, which is why he burns out so fast.

100% agreed. Love the Costanza reference to top it off. Perfectly sums up Foley's football efforts.

Meyer was a mercenary. I always knew that. I'll never feel the same about him as SOS. But he was the best coach in the nation while here, probably was the best at OSU, and I'd take him back in a NY minute even knowing it would be short-lived.

The "list" in 2010 looked almost identical to his list in 2002. It was always "Stoops!!!", "Shanahan!!", "ok,how 'bout this guy?". I'm not generally a huge Foley basher, but the guy has the creativity of a blind goat.

Glad you caught the reference. And yes, that's exactly the way Meyer should be viewed. I always get a chuckle at he disdain for Meyer, when Spurrier has openly said that the would've entertained the ut job had it been available in '05. As it was, he went to Usce and proceeded to cost us the East twice, maybe an outright SEC title in 2005. Still love the guy and he's certainly more of a true Gator than UM as you said. But anyone pretending it's not a business is fooling themselves.

So, in order to claim the national titles I have to like the man who coached the players to win them? I have to lionize him and hope and pray he comes back to coach for us?

Nah.

All I have to do is admit he was good at his job. And he was damn good at his job. There have been lots of people who were good at their job and yet awful individuals. For example...Joe Paterno. Bobby Bowden. Art Briles. Bobby Petrino, Urban Meyer. You get the idea.

Meyer is a complicated guy, possibly a diva or even a psychosomatic.

What makes him an awful human being?
