How good is Kyle Trask? How good can he be?
There's been a lot of talk about how well he played after taking over in the Kentucky game. He did throw a couple of passes that could have (or should have) been picked. We got some luck. Kentucky was missing their best safeties. He also threw a terrible pass in mop-up duty against Tennessee-Martin.
It's hard to gauge from what we saw. Kentucky wasn't prepared for him. They didn't have a defensive game plan designed for him. On the other hand, Trask didn't take the lion's share of the first team snaps in practice either.
Tennessee reinstated CB Bryce Thompson from his indefinite suspension. Thompson was a freshman All-American last year and is by far their best DB.
Thankfully, Trask's first start will be at home in the Swamp.
He's a big kid, strong arm, nice release. Sometimes he makes bonehead decisions.
Not only will this be his first start (as a redshirt junior), but he simply hasn't played that many snaps of live football in his life. What kind of pocket awareness does he have? That ability to sense the pressure and slide away or step up while keeping your eyes downfield generally comes with lots of experience in the pocket. That's why inexperienced QBs are more prone to game-changing scoop-and-score sack/fumbles and tipped pass INTs whereas experienced QBs are able to evade the pressure or throw it away before the rush gets to them.
Will Trask take over the starting role himself or will we see a lot of Emory Jones the way we saw Leak and Tebow in 2006?
What kind of deep ball does Trask have? Is he accurate down the field?
Can he run? Is he a "willing" runner? He's built like a TE so you'd think he's going to be durable but he's had injury problems.
I have no idea what we're going to get out of him this week. We have not demonstrated the capability to run the ball. How will Trask perform against an SEC defense that knows we can't run and knows he's inexperienced? They're going to come at him from all angles. Can he overcome?
Is Trask up to the task? Are we Gators irrationally euphoric? Cautiously optimistic? Headed for a heartbreak? I think we'll see some good plays and a lot of bad plays (and I'm dreading what's going to happen when Auburn brings that salty DL to Gainesville in a couple of weeks).
What do you think?
Alex.
