Up to the Trask?

How good is Kyle Trask? How good can he be?

There's been a lot of talk about how well he played after taking over in the Kentucky game. He did throw a couple of passes that could have (or should have) been picked. We got some luck. Kentucky was missing their best safeties. He also threw a terrible pass in mop-up duty against Tennessee-Martin.

It's hard to gauge from what we saw. Kentucky wasn't prepared for him. They didn't have a defensive game plan designed for him. On the other hand, Trask didn't take the lion's share of the first team snaps in practice either.

Tennessee reinstated CB Bryce Thompson from his indefinite suspension. Thompson was a freshman All-American last year and is by far their best DB.

Thankfully, Trask's first start will be at home in the Swamp.

He's a big kid, strong arm, nice release. Sometimes he makes bonehead decisions.

Not only will this be his first start (as a redshirt junior), but he simply hasn't played that many snaps of live football in his life. What kind of pocket awareness does he have? That ability to sense the pressure and slide away or step up while keeping your eyes downfield generally comes with lots of experience in the pocket. That's why inexperienced QBs are more prone to game-changing scoop-and-score sack/fumbles and tipped pass INTs whereas experienced QBs are able to evade the pressure or throw it away before the rush gets to them.

Will Trask take over the starting role himself or will we see a lot of Emory Jones the way we saw Leak and Tebow in 2006?

What kind of deep ball does Trask have? Is he accurate down the field?

Can he run? Is he a "willing" runner? He's built like a TE so you'd think he's going to be durable but he's had injury problems.

I have no idea what we're going to get out of him this week. We have not demonstrated the capability to run the ball. How will Trask perform against an SEC defense that knows we can't run and knows he's inexperienced? They're going to come at him from all angles. Can he overcome?

Is Trask up to the task? Are we Gators irrationally euphoric? Cautiously optimistic? Headed for a heartbreak? I think we'll see some good plays and a lot of bad plays (and I'm dreading what's going to happen when Auburn brings that salty DL to Gainesville in a couple of weeks).

What do you think?

I think he will do well but my positive outlook on all things orange & blue probably clouds my ability to deconstruct the Trask task with any credibility............so take it with a grain of all that sodium in Gatorade..........:pumper::swampqueen::bananarope:

I think we get more of the same. He has been consistent in every single performance we have seen of him. He has good presence and poise in the pocket, he sees the whole field, he is quick with his decision and he makes a bonehead throw from time to time.

I just want the designed QB runs to stop. Trask hurts people with his arm so let his runs be when the pocket breaks down and there are no open receivers. We can't afford for either Trask or Jones to get hurt.

I think we have no idea. The kid will be starting his very first SEC game in front of 85k people. I am sure he makes mistakes and likely throws an interception or two. All QBs struggle right off the bat. I would like to believe he comes in with the same poise and confidence he showed us at Ky. but who knows. He has never been a starter at any level. He has talent but is known to be injury prone. I hope he can stay healthy. I also believe we see a lot of EJ in several situations. It seems that Kyle has put the time in to know this offense so hopefully it pays off going forward. I know I will be pulling hard for his success.

Let's not forget USCe last year when he won the job on the field only to bust himself up in practice. He may make bonehead mistakes, but the way he found receivers at uk is a sign that he can read defenses. He may prove me wrong but he has earned that chance! I can bet you Jones is going to step it up in practice.

The real question is will Mullen let him continue to throw down field on a regular basis, or will he revert to his read option/sideways passing game plan. If it’s the former, we could be in for something special. If it’s the latter. We’re probably looking at a train wreck coming.

I have been touting Trask for a couple years on the other board based on the limited action he has gotten, but I coach football myself and know what you see in practice doesn't necessarily transfer to the field. Based on KY game, I am not sure why we haven't see more of him. FF must be a monster in practice. FF didn't necessarily have a bad game. He made some great throws and had that one that was a head scratcher.

We need to be a pass heavy team. We have a QB that can throw it, a line that block it, and one of the best receiving corps in the country. I would say the best just due to the depth we have at the position. Not sure there is anyone who is deep enough to cover all 4 receivers. All 4 of them would be a #1 or #2 option on any team in the country.

I honestly believe we are slightly better with Trask at QB, but that said, I don't think it changes the outlook I had for the season based on our schedule. I just don't think we have a real difference maker QB on our roster yet. Hope I'm wrong about that.

The lack of a run game concerns me more than anything. Having any guy make his first career start behind center is tough enough, but if we’re one dimensional it’ll be that much tougher.

I agree that we need to be a pass-first team. The OL is clearly better at pass blocking than run blocking. Not only a pass-first team, but a down-the-field passing team.

I'm not tryna be a big Franks defender or anything but I suspect he didn't see the safety on that pick. Kentucky was wearing blue on blue and the endzone was painted blue and the wall behind the endzone is blue. I think from Franks' perspective, the safety disappeared.

A bonehead play, but I think that's partly why Franks didn't see him (as opposed to seeing him and thinking he could force it in there).

Awesome thread. This is the first time anyone has even mentioned Trask lately.

The owner of the website is poo-pooing more threads and posts?

This isn't about the Kentucky game or the Tennessee game...it's about Trask and the rest of the season. I thought it deserved its own thread.

It's going to be interesting to take a look back at this thread at the end of the season and compare what we thought to what we got.

If we pass more, that should help the run game when we are not facing 8/9 man box.

I’m gonna be honest: I was pretty blown away with his performance. Yes he hit some wide open receivers on his first read but there were several plays where he very quickly went through 2-3 different options all while shuffling around in the pocket because Delance blocks at FSUs level. The pass down the right sideline to Hammond was incredible, made something out of absolutely nothing.

Anxious to see how he does over the course of an entire game with no run game to support him. I don’t see a quick fix for that.

If Mullen is the great QB guru and if Trask has at least average talent, then if the coaches call some good plays, we should beat UT handily.

Buncha IFs there.....
