With 5 minutes left in the game, the math is obvious. In the 3rd quarter, obviously you just kick and accumulate points. Clearly, the issue isn't about math as much as it is about time, yet nobody wants to discuss the time part of the equation because that isn't a chapter in Football for Idiots.

Kentucky had 4, yes 4 more possessions after that TD and we're playing like the game is almost over.

Actually the time aspect is addressed, you wouldn't chase the points in the 3rd quarter, but once the clock enters the 4th quarter... you might have 4 possessions you might have one depending on the other teams decisions as well. That is where you have to start making plans for what kind of scores you are going to have. It's not like we were stopping Kentucky's offense all game long.

So in your mind the start of the 4th quarter is the point where you just go to the chart? Totally disagree and I think decades of evidence to the contrary bear me out.

I was yelling at the tv when I saw us lining up for the first attempt. With how well we had just moved the ball and almost an entire quarter to go, you kick. Chasing points is rarely good and only makes sense if you’re concerned you won’t have enough time to reach the end zone again in that situation.

Zambo is in the minority on this (even the written chart beats him down), yet he's going nuts thinking anyone who disagrees is a complete idiot. I can almost see the spittle hitting his screen.

We ARE complete idiots, but not for this. Going for 2 was the proper call and Mullen should be given a raise and an extension for doing it. Brilliant, brilliant coaching and we're lucky to have him.

And by the way, anybody who needs a chart to do basic math is the definition of an idiot.

No raise or extension, we were in the 4th quarter against Kentucky on their second quarterback and missing a number of the members of their secondary. He gets to keep his job, but we shouldn't have been in that situation to begin with.

Fair enough. At least now he'll be forced to use a QB that can actually put some points on the board.

There is now a "post Franks" Mullen era. It's going to be fascinating to see if it's different.

I have nothing else. You think we should have put ourselves 4 points behind needing a TD to win. I think we should have tried to put ourselves in a position to kick a FG to not lose. Done. That's it. But I do still recommend that last link for you....

Actually he thinks we kick the xp to go 4 behind and need the TD to tie. In the scenario Mullen chose, and I agree with, a made xp gives the opportunity for fg to tie. TD could/should/did win the game either way.
