Ga Tech brought in Bill Curry and he fired all of Roger's assistants, including SOS. That is why SOS always ran the score up on KY & Curry when given the chance.
Not only did Curry fire Steve, he made a remark to the effect that Spurrier just wasn't up to the job - and as I recall, he didn't go out of his way to be too nice about it either. How many times did Curry have that blunder rubbed in his face - one way or another? I imagine he still hears about it now and then.

I can see traditional football coaches thinking SOS was a lazy POS. He was never into the 18-20 days that most thought you had to do in order to be good.

Reportedly, John Mckay held that exact same opinion of SOS. As a general rule, plodders usually hate the thoroughbreds. The guys who actually make it look easy are the most widely hated of all - especially when they're only too happy to rub it in your face.

Steve Spurrier is the greatest of all Gators of all time. Hands down. Big heartfelt thanks also to the late Ray Graves for bringing Spurrier from Tennessee to Gainesville. Without Coach Graves, none of this would ever have happened.

Horsetooth Fooley (then Asst AD) wanted nothing to do with SOS. I forget which garbage coach they recommended to replace Hall.
Ben Hill Griffin and others were having nothing to do with it and forced them to hire SOS.
Im sure someone remembers the names and can set me straight.

Arnsparger and Fooley were both from the other Miami. No surprise they loved defensive boring ass football.

Rumor on the street is this may have been a lovechild situation.

I wonder how many of you can remember off the top of your head where he got his coaching start.

Florida.

After a dismal 1977 campaign, Doug Dickey felt the need to shake things up. He abandoned the wishbone for a more pro-style attack. Spurrier, 33, was brought in to replace Jimmy Dunn, although he was not given the formal OC title. Florida went without one that season.

The results weren't much better, in large part because the roster was thin on talent. John Brantley was the quarterback, sophomore Cris Collinsworth his top receiving threat. The running game was almost non-existent. Three guys put together a little more than 1,000 yards.

The Gators averaged 22 points a game and finished 4-7, losing to Georgia and rising FSU. The entire coaching staff was informed days before the season ended that it would not be retained. Spurrier left for Georgia Tech.

The Charley Pell era began the following season.

I remember that season very well unfortunately. The last game of the year was against Miami. I took my girlfriend (now my wife of 39 years) to the game. She was so excited because it was her first Gators game.

Florida was ahead 20-0 at the half and collapsed in the second half and lost 21-20 I believe. I knew when I left the stadium that Dickey was a goner.

Ahhh yes, the prevent defense.

Ron Zook still swears it's the right thing to do.

And run the clock out.

I wonder how many careers the prevent defense us has ended.

Catch the final play in the Dallas/NO game? For once, the defense actually brought pressure with 5, and (shockingly) Prescott wasn't even given the chance to set his feet and get off his best pass, nor were the WR's given time to get all the way down field. At best, it's a contested catch at like the 20.

The infamous prevent is terrible in it's own right. But it's maddening to think how many games have been lost on hail mary's alone, simply because of not doing that. It's literally basic math.
