Truth Takes: Have Faith

For the first time in weeks, I have a preview. I am looking forward to the trip to Jacksonville. I am taking an unorthodox route to Jacksonville as opposed to my usual route. Granted the last times I did that were 2015 and 2016. I will be sure to have Popeye's for lunch on Friday like I have had every Friday this season, except one...Anyone care to guess? You would be right if you guessed the game at Louisiana State University. Does it really matter? Probably not, is it superstitious? Yes. Also, speaking of rare things, my uncle, from Jacksonville, is currently in Germany due to a vacation planned by his mother months ago without his notice. He has attended almost every Florida-Georgia game since the mid-80's (and before when he wasn't off to college). The last time he wasn't in the Stadium? I'm 90% sure it was 2008. In '08 he stayed outside, met up with his friend who is a higher up with Monster, and got smashed...like UGA got smashed that day. So maybe we have some superstitious and random things working for us?

There are several things about this game that are true:
  1. UGA has not faced an offense near our talent yet. No, I'm not going to give Ian Book any credit so quit asking.
  2. We have not faced an offense with UGA's running prowess. Granted their passing game isn't LSU's so the defensive scheming will be different.
  3. Our defense has yet to play with everyone healthy (the early departures at LSU showed this).
  4. Our run defense and pass defense can be shaky at times, but has also shown up big at times.
  5. We haven't seen UF with this much talent available (IF Toney/Greenard/Zuniga can go) since Week 2.
  6. I expect like the Mud Dogs in the Bourbon Bowl, Dan Mullen will not hold anything back.
Offense
Even an 80% Toney would be a nightmare for UGA. One more guy to keep an eye on and cover. With the emergence of big Kyle Pitts, it would be hard to double either playmaker, much less anyone else on the field with these guys at the same time. If our line gives any time for pass blocking, Trask should be able to have at least a decent day.

Our running game may end up better than the Chuck Oliver's in the world are predicting. I'm not saying its 2014 and I'm meeting Fred Taylor and him telling me I answer trivia questions too fast (and all those people thinking Kearse wasn't and LB at UF), asking about when his son will get a chance, only to watch us run up and down all day on UGA, but I do think we've seen growth the last few weeks. If the growth continues, along with Toney to freeze a defense for just a split second longer, we could average 4+ a carry. I know that might be asking a lot, but I thinking its possible. I think we will see more Jones as well, even if I think Mullen does it at the wrong times.

Defense
I hope we see a lot more man on the outside to attack the run more. Also, the playing soft zones or off the man 5+ yards killed us at LSU along with the blitzes that take the 5th man more than a second to reach the line. Come early, often, and quickly with numbers. If UGA is forced to beat us through the air, let's just pray that Stiner is on the sideline.

An 80-90% Greenard and Zuniga is better than starting the back ups. These guys can set the edge and demand double teams. Hendo and Wilson can either make or lose a lot of money in this game. Reese will have to be the leader of the defense facing an UGA running attack that we shut down on 6 plays from the goal line last season with not much less talent and that is debatable looking at the difference between the two squads.

***
This game is for the East. If we win, book your tickets to ATL because we would have to lose to Vandy and Mizzou and have Mizzou win out to not make it. Technically, we could just lose to Mizzou and not make it, but that requires Mizzou, who lost to Vandy and UK without a QB, to win out and I don't think they are capable of that. Nvm the possibility of a post season ban for Mizzou (last I heard appeal was still pending). There is a lot on the line this week. No excuses.

Yes, UGA will hit a big play. Yes, this team will do a few things to drive you nuts, BUT we have seen UGA struggle against lesser competition. We also might see UF's most complete line up of the season. Have faith, even at LSU we moved the ball, moved the ball, moved the ball until coaching slowed us down. Perhaps we've learned, now if Grantham could be consistent too. Have Faith.

Go Gators!

I don't have "faith" because that means believing something without any evidence. We have a lot of evidence that this team is capable of winning this game. Sure it will take a great game and effort, but this staff appears to be capable of getting that out of the players. Somehow South Carolina did it at their place, surely we can do it in one of the best venues. Go Gators!!!

I don't think that word means what you think it means. Faith is the evidence of things unseen. Like believing in "thoughts" without any measurable data to support the idea. Faith is knowing with certainty that something is true because you have experienced the effects personally. Probably a topic for another thread but I have faith this will generate some opinions.

Good analysis. Toney being back in this offense is huge, it really can't be understated.

Putting him in motion and causing LBers to pause for just a split second, as you mentioned. But having him in the slot will also make defenses adjust: you either take your chances that a single defender can make the tackle in space...or shift help from elsewhere (a LB or safety)...which will likely free up both the run game and at least one deep route.

I like Toney, and those are very good reasons to put him on the field. I wish he'd get north-south more often than east-west. It seems he has at least one "WTF is he doing?!?!" moment every game. In fact, the play he got injured on he was going east-west and got blown the F up (by a 1AA defense). Hopefully we scheme to get him downfield more.

Absolutely, the knock on him is that he doesn't turn upfield quick enough...but the shallow crossing route has been a staple of our offense since Trask has come here and with Toney getting the ball in space and one defender on him...I'm going to bet more often than not, we break big plays.

Hammond's TD vs Auburn wouldn't have happened (Toney would have slowed to juke instead of reading the angle right and using speed to thread between the 2 downfield defenders); but I suspect that several of our 7-12 yard crosses to Swain/Hammond that get caught and get first downs will go for 20-30 yards with Toney.

Good points but to me none of the analysis about Toney or anything else really matters in this game. Of course they are going to be aware of any guy in motion, but this is the most simplistic game plan for both teams that you could possibly have. UGA will not put any extra emphasis on stopping the run and is going to feel they can stop the run with their front 4, with good reason given the stats. The rest of the D will be playing pass first. As for us, if I am Joe Lee Dunn Jr. I committ 9 guys to the run on every play and if they beat us by throwing a lot so be it. And especially on anything 3rd down and less than 20, I still play run.

True...but that defensive gameplan has a lot of vulnerabilities to be exploited. It means they'll be in nickel or dime packages all day...and by definition means you'll have a mistmatch vs Pitts; and will also open up the zone-read by Trask and whomever is back there as our RB. Trask is nowhere near the runner Franks or Jones is...but he there will be a numbers mismatch in our favor if they're going heavy to defend the pass.

That is exactly my point and you made it for me. We have had numbers advantages on almost every snap since Trask began starting and have not proven we can run the ball for an inch. That is not a knock it is a fact. UGA is not going to care if it opens read option opportunities. I guarantee you they think they can win one of the matchups at the LOS and disrupt the run. I truly think it is as simple as that. UGA will say if they beat us running the ball so be it. UF should being saying if they beat us throwing the ball so be it. Your point about having vulnerabilities is correct provided you can block properly, not something this O-line has shown it can do marginally well.

I haven't seen us do much of the zone read since Trask came in though. It's mostly just handoffs and pretty basic dives/counters. It's not his strength, so have been fine with Mullen not being a slave to it...but I wouldn't be surprised if Mullen dials a few plays early to see if it can work. Like you, I suspect georgia's DL can disrupt our OL and negate the numbers advantage though.

I don't think we'll see much of Trask running unless it's short yardage, and even then I'm not sure. Nonetheless, while he's not the runner that FF was, they know he can run. I would like to see some option calls, they worked last year (yes, FF was QB) but they could work again. Perhaps on short yardage, I'd love to see the call no one ever makes (well, SOS did in 1993 SECC in Bham), fake dive and QB bootleg (Terry Dean did it). You cannot live off of a play like that, but if we need short yardage in a crucial situation, I'd like to see Dan go to it.

Trask hits that wide open TD on the opening series from last year. Just sayin’.

I think that these somewhat support my view, but I don't insist on it.

I have objective evidence that we have a fair chance of winning this game. This evidence includes the following:

We beat Auburn.
We were competitive with LSU
Georgia lost to South Carolina at Georgia
Some Georgia fans are still whining about the game being in Jacksonville due to it reducing their ability to recruit. It does the same for us, and I think playing this traditional big game is a reason to come to Florida, not a disincentive to recruits. Perhaps some Georgia fans see it differently.

Thanks for the response.

I think the OP was thinking of “faith” by it’s “confidence” definition. “Have confidence”.

I’m fine with it as the OP said it.

As I was saying - he usually gives us a "WTF is he doing?!?" moment every game....
