Let's also keep in mind that when we pursued him he was always employed. At this point, he's been sitting on his ass for 3 years and is probably bored out of his mind.

I don't think he was employed in 2017 when SOS approached him, no?

I had to look it up, but it's true! :lol2:

Whereas the other three Stoops brothers have all been HC's at Power Five schools, Ron "Fredo" Stoops Jr. has been toiling in relative obscurity for 10 years as a lowly special teams coordinator for Youngstown State. Got those bloodlines, though! Go get him, Noles. $40 million for five years sounds about right. You can email the offer to [email protected]

That's absolutely amazing that he wasn't on staff w/ one of his brothers. I can't imagine the ST's coach at a 1AA school is making much more than $60-$80K/year. He'd get 3x that (or more) at UK or Oklahoma. He must be an outcast...or as you said, "Fredo".

It looks like the Criminoles are going to stay true to their name and just promote the ex felon on staff. Jim Leavitt has been promoted and I fully expect him to be the secret head coach in waiting. They'll give him a rest of the to season audition for head coach and will name him head coach at the end of the season. It's all they can afford at this point and probably the best they can do.

Well, if the Holes get desperate, Bo Pelini would be someone to consider. So what if he suffered several meltdowns at Nebraska. He won no less than 9 games during his 7 or 8 seasons as head coach there.

If they promote from within it will be Haggins. Leavitt would get D- Coor

No one is celebrating yet. Let's see how this plays out. I find it hard to believe they would scrape up 20 million and jettison willie without knowing that had a decent coach landed.

Would they need someone to do a coach search if they already had someone?

You do? I mean they paid $30M to get Willie to run their sh*t into the ground for a year and half, so I’m confident they’ll clown it up again!

So that they can convey that they really did search across all reasonable options, and then validate that their choice to promote from within is the right choice. It protects the AD by allowing him to say "we reviewed the choices with a panel of experts, and this was the best option", rather than it looking like just another AD screw-up. It happens all the time

To be fair, Leavitt is probably a decent coach from a purely football standpoint. USF hired him before they even had a football program in operation, and he took them to a 9 win FBS team. I'm not saying he's elite or that I'd be scared of him, but they could (and did) do far worse.

Speaking of amazing...check out the lengthy list of accomplishments on his profile page on the Youngstown State website, which I have to believe was compiled by none other than Fredo himself. Who else would do it?

I might've suspected the guy is borderline "special" or something (not that there's anything wrong with that), but his profile does say he has a wife and four kids. So he's apparently not some sort of mental invalid. But clearly does not seem to have his other brothers' coaching acumen.

That's an impressive coaching career. Sounds like he didn't want to move. He's been in the same area his whole life (since college at least). So the hire at YSU under Pelini was probably a big move for him. He probably coached long enough in the HS ranks to get his state pension. Still surprising that he didn't join one of his brothers coaching staffs, especially after 2006-2008 time frame when assistant salaries started shooting up.
