So Gators, here we are. More or less exactly where we were last year. 2 disappointing and frustrating losses heading into a Mizzo game where no one is confident because that garbage team always gives us headaches. Let's recap things up to now.

On the roster/crootin front:
The roster really isn't much better (there will be some who argue otherwise but the crootin class rankings are about the same as they were under sharkfvker) and we still have the same major depth issues at multiple positions. Yeah, yeah... our composite average ranking star treck teleport beam dyhydratech encabulator might be better, but the play on the field still looks the same.

Safety, linebacker and interior defensive line play continues to be dreadful - no real changes there. Perhaps there's been some talent/athleticism upgrades, but its largely negated by piss poor coaching.

Offensive line has significantly regressed from last year where we were passing and run blocking pretty well by this point in the season. Doesn't really feel like depth and talent there has improved much either. Hevesy has proven he can get guys to play so I feel a little better about this one going forward, but dammit man, get some beef with quick feet for a change.

We have some pretty good skill guys on offense but more than I'd like are transfers. This second chance U rep we are developing isn't one I'm all that excited about. Need to get these kids to sign from day 1 instead of hoping to be someones plan B if somewhere else doesn't work out.

On the coaching front:
What can be said that hasn't already? There's a lot of fat to be trimmed on this staff. If we all can see it, why cant Dan? If he does see it, why isn't he doing something about it? English and knox need to be gone the morning after FSU if they cant be terminated sooner. ST coordinator needs to take a hike as well. I know most are all in on firing fat todd but that seems like a pipe dream. I'd settle for the 3 stiffs above to be replaced by hot shot crooters; hell, they couldn't be any worse at coaching if they tried. Defensive philosophy is killing us as much as fat todd's third down failures. When you tell a skinny linebacker (moon) to get into a 3 point stance on the interior of the D line, well... i guess you get what the **** you deserve. Moron. But I digress.

Dan needs to get an actual offensive coordinator and let him take over the play calling. For every play we like, he counters with 1 or 2 absolutely dreadful and confounding decisions. Maybe if he does this he can spend more time overseeing and evaluating his coaches. Perhaps this will lend itself to that eureka moment where he realizes, "Wow, English Sucks!" Until then here's hoping 2 bits super secret coaching upgrades are really coming.

Program Trajectory:
We need some changes this off season, for improvements in player development and player acquisition. If we dont get any I think we may very well have already plateaued under ol Dan. If I was a betting man I'd say we finish at 10-2 finally getting a W over mizzo, but consider we lose just that 1 additional game. Where are we at? It's a carbon copy of last year, not that 10-2 is much different but my point is, it sure looks like we may already have found this program's ceiling under the current regime. Upgrades are desperately needed, and not just in facilities.

So there's my take. Go ahead and tell me how wrong I am. Go Gators.

Be really interesting to see how QB situation shakes out for next year. Trask has been good, but to go into a 3rd year with a QB that still doesn’t fit your offense is not a good sign Imo. I think overall the trajectory is going up, just not near the rate we want to see it. No one can argue that some staff changes need to be made. Hopefully it happens.

We lost to Kentucky and Missouri last year in addition to Georgia. This year we've lost to 2 Top 10 teams. I agree that some of last year's problems still exist, especially on the offensive line. Our linebackers and still slow, but not having Gardner-Johnson has made the secondary a lot worse. He was great and Dean has been a major disappointment replacing him. Mullen has got to step it up in recruiting and bring in more 4 & 5 star guys, especially in the trenches.

Crootin was fine last year. Too bad half of them never made it in. So crootin is worse than Butters. Mullins needs to croot a top 10 class that can actually qualify. He needs a top tier QB that can run his offense. And we desperately need some blue chip linebackers that can stop the run in the SEC.

I pretty much agree. I'm a little less pessimistic on the coaching staff but we might have our Richt. Good but never great

He needs better recruiting. Period

I never had any thoughts that we’d return to National Championship level under Mullen. I guess it’s possible if he ever lands a Tebow or Cam type QB, but it’s not likely.
That said, we are much better than we were under the last 2 morons. We’re a couple of years away from having good facilities. I enjoy watching Gator football again, so I say we keep him until you KNOW you can get the right guy to lead you back to glory. Stability is crucial right now IMO. Don’t wanna see us turn into Miami or Tennessee.
Check with me after next season and my opinion may change.

Without facilities? I learned here that its not possible.
Shane Matthews has been saying on Gainesville radio for years that until the facilities are upgraded and on par with other elite programs, we will continue to miss out on getting a lot of big time recruits. And even though UF had a Top 10 recruiting class on NSD, that means nothing unless the guys are on the roster in the fall. When they re-calculated our class after the transfers and non-qualifiers, we ended up #17. That's not gonna cut it in the SEC.

Yep so why does everyone still say our coaches cant recruit? Wouldn't we only know that if we had top tier facilities?

So the secret is asking our recruits if they plan on being accused of multiple sexual assaults before classes start, triggering a mass transfer of their classmates.

We'll be fine. The sun will come up tomorrow. Five stars are lining up to visit. Dan is proving he is the QB whisperer. If a loss to UGA proved our program was dying then it died long ago...........I wise woman told me this during the dark times "the sun dont shine on one dog's behind, all the time" She was right............

Thanks Durty, I've been mulling these things over and thought about starting a thread, being a little disillusioned after the disaster in Jax i was lazy and put it off.

Bottom line from my musings are: Mullen is a huge upgrade over butters, which we had to pull the trigger and dump, Dan was the best option at the moment, but after 10 years as a head coach, we know what we will get. He's enthusiastic, wants to be a gator, wants to do the right thing... but his system can not compete for championships unless he gets that once in generation player like Tebow, with supporting staff. So, with the average star power that he recruits and his system coupled with his penchant for just going off the rails with some boneheaded play calling, it will cost the team at least 1 game a year they shouldn't lose.Add in Grantham schitting the bed at least one game a year, and minimum you will get 2 losses.

This staff is who they are. They are not elite, somewhere between good and great at times. To compete for championships there are several factors, as noted, our facilities need to be upgraded to the latest greatest, if we are only doing this once a decade, do it the best you can at the time. We need top notch recruiters. The elephant in the room of course is the bagmen.. since Zooker, the school really wants to run a clean program, bama recruits every year post pics of the money, cars, etc, their families get new cars, houses.. Kirby jumps over to jawja, a defensive coordinator, before ever coaching one game signs the #6 class. It's part of the game, we need to step up in that department too, boosters reading.. do your job ;) Elite talent does win championships!!

There are no sure fire home run hires to replace Mullen. He's a solid coach, but I don't think he has what it takes to get the team to the top of the mountain. We'll be riding this train for at least 3-4 more years... may the football gods look with favor upon us and help the ball bounce our way.

Go Gators

You feel the same way whether we are 4-8 or 10-2. Try and stay out of these discussions, they are for people that are actually interested in accomplishing goals. I can start a "participation trophy" thread for you if you'd like. You can even talk about the 0-10-1 good 'ol days.

By the way, Mullen the "QB whisperer"? If Franks doesn't get hurt Trask hasn't taken a single snap and UF is an unranked team right now.

Top ten recruiting classes are not good enough. To compete with Georgia, Bama, Clemson, we need Top 3 classes like Urban used to bring in. I am baffled how Dan coached under Urban, who is the best recruiter in college football, and doesn't get recruiting.

Still baffled how it took Franks getting hurt and almost 2 years to figure out Trask is the best QB on the team... I know Trask was supposed to start last season before he got hurt but, it took Franks SUCKING vs. Missouri for him to even get a look...
