Great writeup on 2020 CB commit Trevez Johnson from Will Sammon (The Athletic, subs req'd) - It's easy to look at subjective things but good to also look deeper and understand why - Will does this here in regards to Trevez's ranking and recruitment overall. Excited about getting Trevez to Gainesville!

Some tidbits in addition to the solid backstory of his recruitment:

4.3-4.4 timed out on three stopwatches on his trip to Florida
Grown to 6'0, 200 this season
Potential Star position player

Tre'Vez Johnson, 2020 Cornerback - Rivals.com

Wow, I didn't realize he was 6' 200. He's listed on most sites around 5'11 180.

Some more goodness:

Johnson has thickened to 6-feet, 200 pounds. A corner who had 41 tackles and four interceptions this past season for Bartram Trail (which, at 11-1, ended its season last week in a playoff loss to Apopka), Johnson profiles as a strong safety or nickelback for the Gators; he is a hard hitter with impressive speed. Johnson won’t enroll early. He said he is in contact plenty with Gray, English and head coach Dan Mullen. Florida, he said, is mostly viewing him as an option for its Star position.
“He’s extremely gifted,” Bartram Trail head coach Darrell Sutherland said. “He’s not just a burner; he’ll come and light people up.”
When the Gators became intrigued with Johnson, they wanted to learn more about him. They asked Sutherland about practice habits and potential leadership traits. Sutherland shared with Florida the times Johnson would work on his backpedaling on the sideline during breaks between practices, how he attended every workout and how he was pulling younger teammates to the side for quick chats and footwork if he saw poor body language.
Johnson’s highlight film depicts plays of him blowing up screens and jarring balls loose. But there are also times when he shows patience in the secondary, when he doesn’t bite on fakes, when his 3.77 GPA and 1,130 SAT score translates to football.

Trevez is a good example of the limitations of the services. As far as I know, he hasn’t camped or hasn’t camped much. If a kid doesn’t camp, the services are useless. A lot of times, a kid only camps with one service. Jovens Janvier is a perfect example. 247 ranks him 129 at guard. But, they’ve never seen him. He’s camped with Rivals on a number of occasions which is why Rivals ranks him 15 putting him a high 3 to low 4. Janvier was bumped down because he showed up overweight at a recent Rivals camp and performed poorly.

No, don't say that! Stars are everything particularly when both main services are run by Georgia fans. Why would you believe the coaches evaluation that look at game film, not just highlights, but also talk to coaches about things like leadership skills and practice habits. I mean the services can't really look at all those highlights from all those recruits, can they? There are thousands of them.

Generally, the services are pretty good. That's been proven. It is when you see huge differences in rankings, that is when you'll find out one kid camped at one place over the other.

I do find 247 sketchy at times. Carter Boatright was unranked. 247 didn't even know who he was. Then, after he committed to fsu, he got ranked above Jonathan Odom. When asked about it, Josh Newberg said they watched highlight film of him. That's how he got the initial ranking. That's pure garbage. Berg wasn't joking either. He was being serious.

At the end of the day, most of the top kids are going to multiple camps and getting graded out by all the services. I don’t even think Law would gripe about a 3* type kid if it’s known he hasn’t camped and there is some film on him. No one ever said all 3*s are bad. But these should be the exceptions, not the rule. With Johnson, it was probably obvious that he was underrated and made it easier to spot and offer. We’re about to see how some of these “underrated” prospects from the first two classes pan out.

Great article. 6 foot and 200lbs. With 4.3 speed. Jesus. Built for Star position.

My other favorite part of the article:

Johnson’s highlight film depicts plays of him blowing up screens and jarring balls loose. But there are also times when he shows patience in the secondary, when he doesn’t bite on fakes, when his 3.77 GPA and 1,130 SAT score translates to football.

Sounds like he just took his Clemson OV this weekend. Was kept on the DL

Yeah I heard that but I’m not sure I ever saw it was confirmed...but still that’s very odd to have a star commit OV to the team he’s committed to in secrecy

If weight is the only issue for him, I can just imagine his first conversation, once he gets to campus, with Coach Savage: "Jovens, let me tell you the story of a young man named Ethan White...."
