Auburn transfer Joey Gatewood reportedly schedules visit to SEC school

A week after Auburn backup quarterback Joey Gatewood said he would transfer from Auburn, a report has come out that he’s scheduled a visit with another SEC school.

Matt Jones of Kentucky Sports Radio reported that the former blue chip recruit would visit Kentucky this week as the Wildcats take on Tennessee. Gatewood was frustrated with his role at Auburn and lack of playing time despite struggles for the Tigers’ offense led by QB Bo Nix.

Yesterday on Kentucky Sports Radio, Jones teased the potential transfer, saying that Kentucky had a “very good shot” at landing the former four-star prospect.

“It does look like the transfer thing is out,” Jones said. “It’s Joey Gatewood, the quarterback from Auburn that is transferring because Bo Nix has that job in perpetuity. He is looking at a number of schools, but I’m here to tell you, Kentucky is right there for him. Not just in the mix, and I’m not saying we’re the leader, I’m just telling you this is not just a list of schools and Kentucky is one of them. I’m telling you Kentucky is in. They have a very good shot at getting him. That doesn’t mean they will, and I’m not making a prediction, but I’m telling you it’s serious interest.”

Gatewood was ranked the No. 49 overall recruit in the class of 2018 on the 247Sports Composite. He had 34 scholarship offers, including Alabama, Clemson, Florida, Florida State and LSU. Early in Gatewood’s recruiting process (2015), many recruiting experts predicted he would pledge to FSU and then-coach Jimbo Fisher.

Gatewood is a 6-foot-5, 233-pound redshirt freshman and Jacksonville, Florida native. He appeared in seven games this season, he completed 5-of-7 passing attempts with two touchdowns to go with 29 rushes for 148 yards and three touchdowns on the ground.

If Gatewood commits to Kentucky, he would likely have to sit out next season due to NCAA transfer rules before taking over as the team’s starter in 2021. Barring an NCAA waiver, the former four-star prospect would have two years of eligibility remaining.
That's exactly the landing spot I predicted to a friend who's a big Auburn fan when the news of his transfer first came out. KY's a good place for a QB with legs.

From the article,

he has scheduled a visit with Florida in the first week of December.

This makes me wonder if one of the QBs is leaving besides Franks.
Or if he realizes now that he is a WR.

Gotta be places more likely to play him than here at UF?
EJ has had all positive trials and Mullen still won't let him play a whole drive.

And what of Franks? Seems like he’s the odd man out. I will wish him the best if he must go.

In olden days, Franks would stay and we'd have a battle-Royale for starting QB. And to our benefit, UF would have a top backup QB. Still, it's EJ that makes Franks odd man out now.

So from here on, Mullen knows that Franks can't do the "needed" things that Trask can.
Why didn't he earlier find that out in QB practices? Was it Mullen's seniority-experience status-quo blinders at work?

Maybe it was the shocking pick-6 Trask threw on his first pass in the Spring game? Maybe it was Franks' superior athleticism. Don't know. But glad Trask finally got his chance and produced.

Been saying this all along. I think it's one of the reasons we don't get elite players, their not sure if they will see much of the field their fr year
Freshman? Try wont see the field for their RSoph year.

Youre talking about a guy who started Tyler Russell over Dak in 2012 and 2013;

The guy who let Cam Newton run one series in his Gator career; and

The guy who was prepared to start Franks 2018, 2019 and 2020, if not for injury.

It's a major problem with Mullen that needs to be addressed but never will be. In the end it will be his downfall

I wonder if jones is looking to transfer? The only real explanation for having him visit.
