How do you go about it? Do you limit it to a couple wideouts and a tight end and how prolific they were? Do you look at the body of work of the entire roster? How many receptions does a good season make? Should yards per catch slant the discussion? How important are the contributions of the tight end?

I perused over the past 40 years. That used up half a pot of coffee. It’s easy to find years where we had two or three great receivers. It’s not so easy to find years where we had great receivers and a great tight end. In fact, there are only four seasons in which we had three receivers, the tight end included, with 30 or more catches.

So how do you rate these? Does the 2019 group belong?

1990
Terence Barber 35 Rec, 431 Yds, 12.3 Avg
Ernie Mills 41 Rec, 770 Yds, 18.8 Avg
Kirk Kirkpatrick 55 Rec, 770 Yds, 14.0 Avg

2007
Percy Harvin 59 Rec, 858 Yds, 14.5 Avg
Andre Caldwell 56 Rec, 761 Yds, 13.6 Avg
Louis Murphy 37 Rec, 548 Yds, 14.8 Avg
Cornelius Ingram 34 Rec, 508 Yds, 14.9 Avg

2008
Louis Murphy 38 Rec, 655 Yds, 17.2 Avg
Percy Harvin 40 Rec, 644 Yds, 16.1 Avg
Aaron Hernandez 34 Rec, 381 Yds, 11.2 Avg

2019 (through 11 games)
Freddie Swain 30 Rec, 434 Yds, 14.5 Avg
Van Jefferson 38 Rec, 480 Yds, 12.6 Avg
Trevon Grimes 30 Rec, 470 Yds, 15.3 Avg
Kyle Pitts 46 Rec, 566 Yds, 12.3 Avg
(Lamical Perine has 32 catches but for only a 5.6 average. Should we include him?)

2001 had this for all-around.

Jabbar Gaffney 67/1,181/17.8
Reche Caldwell 65/1,059/16.3
Taylor Jacobs 38/712/18.7
Aaron Walker 16/179/11.2

1994 had this.

Reidell Anthony 30/615/29.5
Chris Doering 35/496/14.2
Aubrey Hill 33/546/16.5
Jack Jackson 57/855/15.0
Shawn Nunn 7/68/9.7

Spurrier didn’t use the tight end as much as many of you may remember.

Yeah, I just assumed that all those back to back SEC champ years with Danny our rec corp in general lit it up. Interesting. Erron Kinney had a pretty successful NFL career but very mediocre with SOS. Good point.

We’ve certainly had better receivers, most of them during the SOS years, but when you go back you seldom if ever see the depth of production like we’re getting now.

Maybe because we could run the ball then???

Sorry but tight end or no, the corps of Ike Hilliard, Riedel Anthony, and Jaquez Green, all of whom played in the NFL, was outstanding.

Necessity is the mother of invention.

Re Spurrier, that story often gets mistranslated in terms of how and when. We were front runners. We’d jump on the opponent through the air early and settle on running the ball and the clock in the second half.

They were, no doubt. This is just another angle and an attempt to draw comparisons to the current group.

Talent wise this year's group is up there with most of those years. Probably top 5 in the country overall. Scary thought going into next season with a crappy running game

And we’re mentioning Kinney, but we also had solid guys like Allen and (I think) Ross and Nunn during that stretch. Not sure the exact years they were all here, but that group was deep.

And in addition to the ‘01 WRs, we had Troupe and Aaron Walker.

Where this year’s group is in the discussion is the comparable depth. We have so many options. But they’re not as dynamic. So if you have to choose just 3 starters and a TE, you’d go with one of those years above.

Even ‘78 trashing Spurrier. Never thought I’d see the day. I expect it from Seabee and Ox.
I think he stays drunk 90% of the time.

The whole theory that it isnt a good receiver corps if he threw TDs to the WR instead of dumpoff passes to the TE came from very deep in a bottle of something.

Yeah, a team w three first team All American WRs and a fourth who was All SEC cant compete w some 450 yard receivers.

This is a deep talented group, but there isnt even one first team AA.

He is desperately wedded to making Mullinz into something other than Butters 2.0.

Yeah, mostly drunk posting that largely ignores reality in hopes of pushing a narrative about a coach is one of the worst things ever. It’s just terrible and should result in a banning, or at a minimum, the occasional self imposed exile.

You remind me of that character on South Park that’s always nervous and scared. It’s gonna be alright little buddy.

We lose a lot of talent but a lot of young talent is coming back. There are some bright spots, notably Pitts, that will be around.

Well, all Mullen needs to do is have a winning record next year to hurdle Butters and Chump. Doesn’t seem like a high bar. I’d wager he clears that and you look like an idiot.
