from a long-term perspective, Haggins wouldn't hurt the program nearly as much as a Kiffin or one of these other 3rd tier coaches. To get someone like a Norvell they'll have to put up a huge buyout in the contract.

It likely comes down to these two with Haggins needing a huge effort against Florida to win over boosters, who are likely swaying toward Norvell. I’d put the odds on Norvell being the hire.
It would be surprising to me if Haggins was ultimately the guy. Seems like best case scenario is the hope that he can somehow have a year like Ed O is having at LSU. Right now he doesn't have the roster and would have to knock it out of the park when assembling a staff. Word up this way is that they want to find a way to keep Briles, believing he is an up-and-comer. I don't think he is in the same class as LSU's pass game coordinator.

Recruiting is Haggin's forte, but he'd really have to have a good deal of support just to tread water. He's no Bobby Bowden or even Jimbo Fister, but once all is said and done he might well take the reins unless they pull a rabbit out of the hat. I know better than to feel this way, but it's kinda nice seeing somebody else struggle with HC recruitment.

My point with Haggins is that he can be dropped at any point. They hire one of these other worthless types and they'll have buyout as big as Willie's because how he got dumped on. Could you imagine Kiffin their with a 5 year contract and a $20 mil buyout for the first 3 years.

Anybody they hire to be their head coach, Haggins included, will have a buyout attached to the deal, unless Haggins represents himself without an agent...which I believe is not even a remote possibility.

Most of the conversation around Haggins is that he'd have the interim tag for a year, plus or minus. Even if he is "officially hired" his contract will be cheap as sh!t. He's not going anywhere, even if they give him a job outside of coaching football, aft this runs its course. So he's not going to bust balls with a huge contract negotiation. It's not difficult.

Similar to Matt Luke's deal at Ole Miss. They may give him two years and let him get a decent staff in there, pay him $2 million/year w/ a small buyout ($500k or so). It would also allow them to get back in better financial standing. The fans won't like it though, and I can't imagine the recruits would be flocking to Tallahassee either. This will be absolute rock bottom option though (and they're almost there).

I actually believe this would be their smartest play. Unless you count urban, there are no big fish in play this offseason, and even if he was, he aint takin that sht job. So they swing on some random stiff but are forced to pay him handsomely to pull him away from a situation that's better, because lets face it, even New Mexico State is in a better situation than halfassu right now. With the fan base ready to can you 8 games into your first season and the admin willing to pull the plug half way through your second, nobody is taking that job without a good salary and big buyout; its just too risky a situation for a coach unless he had some serious dollars as incentive. If reports are true that fsu wants to keep some of the staff on to save money or because they like them, that will just be another turn off for anyone outside and another issue to be overcome with money.

So they hire the random stiff and it doesnt work out - now they have doubled down on bankruptcy and are way worse program wise than they are now. Lost decade level.

Or they could hire slowdell, pay him peanuts because they can and keep the interim tag on him. Worst case scenario they get better financially, recruiting improves, and in 2-3 years they are more attractive to someone else.

I think either way they go, its gonna be awful on the playing field, but the slowdell option slows the financial bleeding. This really is hilarious to watch - no matter what they are screwed

Durty your post makes great sense, but its just hard to believe they came up with 18 million to keep an interim. I just cannot believe even FSU is so stupid as to pay all that money and have no plan. Now they sent another fundraising letter and if they keep Odell I would demand my money back. Somewhere there's a plan, whether they can execute it who knows.

Well they didn't pay it.
They were bailed out, otherwise WiLLLLLLLie would still be coach.

All indications are that the Haggins interview went really well.

I can't help but think that they had a plan and it went to schitt. (Like maybe they really thought they were getting Big Game Bob when they kicked Willie to the curb.) Now that Plan A fell on it's ass, they're looking like a clown show because there never was a Plan B.
I also don't see how making Odell an interim is good for the long term health of the program. It has to hurt recruiting for the foreseeable future.
I guess clowns are gonna clown.

I think Florida State is in a real bad situation here. All of their main big hire targets have told them to go throw rocks. The only dude that seems to be left is Norvell, and we really have no idea how he would do with a big time program, and it seems he has some sort of dark past that keeps programs from taking a serious look at him. I think it's safe to say that Haggins would be laughable, sort of like Matt Luke at Ole Miss. I think the dark days for the semi's are far from over from what I can tell.

Looks as though the Spanx founder never donated squat to the buyout, let alone to anyone in the athletic program. With her being a billionaire, she has far more money than every desperate donor/booster at FSU who helped Sh*T can WIIIIIILLLLLLLIEEE.

They absolutely are that stupid. The entire team and a significant portion of the fan base are now heavily behind slowdell. They think he's some diamond in the rough. 5-0 as HC!

It's hilarious

Interesting. It does make one wonder from where the money came.

Knowing f$u, they just played a shell game with state and federal tax revenue that should’ve gone towards academics. They’ve done it before... well, I seem to remember a story about it a few years back...
