The bowl predictions currently have FSU and UCF meeting in the Gasparilla Bowl (12/23). While a victory for UCF will make their fans insufferable, the misery for FSU fans would be worth it.

CBS 130 shows the knights at 29 and f$u at 57. f$u is right in behind butter's chippewas in the poll.

Durt, great comment! ucf would eat up f$u's secondary, but the noles and the chippewas-now there's a game!

Orange would be a great payday for the Gators.

Breaking down the Florida Gators Bowl game chances | GatorCountry.com

"As we stand right now the most likely bowl scenario is for the Gators to play in the Orange Bowl against Virginia. That’s a very good matchup for the Gators in terms of ability to win, get to 11 games and win back-to-back New Year’s Six Bowl games. It’s not going to do well on television, it’s not a great game in terms of drawing a national audience but that’s what happens when you have contractual obligations. Regardless, it will be a great end to the season for the Gators and South Florida Gator fans will love to have their team in their backyard."
Gawd I hope not. Doubt I'd even watch that on TV. Rather play Memphis in the Cotton just for UCF connection.
Can't think of anything interesting about Virginia. Honestly, I kinda forgot they still had a football team.

My only interest is that my son went to VT and UVA is like FSU to them. I would hope we'd pound them.

It’ll be the best bowl they’ve seen. They’ll travel.

I’ll watch no matter where we go, but I would prefer the Orange. It’s a traditional bowl and we’ve done well there. Gator fans will be out in droves.

Why the hell an unranked team would get an OB invite is beyond me. Simply stupid.

bc the obligation is to the acc, the distance between clemson and everyone else is light years... theyve been 30 point+ favorites to everyone in their confernce... what a joke

I can't help but feel bad for Minnesota. A week ago, they were about to host a game to get them into the B1G championship game that would put them one (unlikely) win away from the playoffs. Then they get blown the f*ck out, are out of the conference championship and playoff picture, and are relegated to the Outback Bowl since the Citrus will take Michigan. After all that, at least they'll probably be playing Tennessee, a team they could easily beat. Then Bama loses to Auburn and plummets in the rankings, which basically guarantees they'll now have to play one of those teams instead of Tennessee.

Row the boat!

Why can't 10-2 Florida get a matchup with 10-2 Notre Dame?

Thanks, I'll hang up and listen.
Because bowl tie-ins. From Wikipedia:

The Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) is locked into a 12-year deal (2014–2025) with the Orange Bowl, so if the ACC champion qualifies for the playoffs in a year when the Orange Bowl is not a semifinal host, the next-highest ranked ACC team will play in the Orange Bowl. For the secondary tie-ins, the Southeastern Conference (SEC) and the Big Ten Conference are guaranteed three appearances each, and the University of Notre Dame can play in a maximum of two games, but is not guaranteed any appearances. The ACC team's opponent in a given year will be the highest-ranked available team from the SEC, Big Ten, and Notre Dame, subject to several constraints: the SEC and Big Ten champions are always excluded, and when an SEC and/or Big Ten team qualifies for the College Football Playoff, the next available team would also be excluded from participating in the Orange Bowl due to contractual obligations with the Sugar Bowl and Rose Bowl, respectively. Also, should a highest-ranked team create a rematch with the ACC team, the Orange Bowl has the option of passing over that team for the next-highest ranked team among the Big Ten, SEC, and Notre Dame, again subject to the noted constraints. Rankings are based on the College Football Playoff committee's rankings.

Okay thanks, but why specifically does the Orange Bowl contract preclude the possibility of UF and Notre Dame meeting in that or any other bowl game this year?
Because if we're the highest ranked SEC/B1G team available, the Orange Bowl has to take us. Notre Dame will end up being selected by someone else. You can't just start calling every bowl game who will listen and try to pitch a UF/ND matchup.

Ahh, okay. I had to go back and read your previous post again, but now I get it. The Orange Bowl has to be ACC vs. (B10/ND or SEC), it can't be Big 10/ND vs. SEC. And we are basically locked into the Orange Bowl at this point because we jumped Penn State so will be the highest-ranked SEC team available, with LSU in the CFP and UGA in the Sugar Bowl, or vice-versa.

Maybe I would've known that already if I'd read the thread. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Too bad UF and Notre Dame can't face off in the Cotton Bowl, which as I understand it is at-large vs. at-large, meaning no conference commitments. But if we're stuck in the Orange Bowl I won't complain too much. It'll be about a 20-25 minute ride from home for me!
The Cotton Bowl this year is contractually obligated to take the highest ranked Group of 5 team, who will face the highest ranked remaining team who hasn't been selected for a NY6 bowl.

Yes, the orange bowl is designed to be for the ACC what the Sugar Bowl is for the SEC. when it isn’t part of the playoffs, it is intended to be where the top ranked ACC team that isn’t going to the playoffs goes.

the interesting wrinkle to me is that I assume Clemson is on the CFP after easily beating Virginia. Virginia is currently the next highest ranked ACC team, so they would go to the Orange. But everywhere I read about the ACC tie-Ins to the orange bowl mention the highest RANKED ACC team (per CFP rankings). If Clemson beats #23 Virginia so badly that they drop out of the rankings, there will be no ranked ACC team besides Clemson. Does that open the door for the Orange Bowl to select a ranked non-ACC team? I don’t know if that’s addressed in the contract. But it does make me wonder.
