I think Matt Luke would have been successful at Ole Miss and am surprised they let him go...thought their lack of winning would have allowed them to be more patient.

At any rate, I believe he is a solid addition to the Dwag's staff.

:britney:

You realize he was the main reason for their lack of winning right?

That NEVER occurred to me.

His 3 years, there, were plenty enough time to implement all of his plans I'm sure.

Also, so Ole Miss's situation must be completely different from UF's because all I hear about for our situation is that:
- the A.D. is directly responsible for kids not signing with us
- Our facilities are the only reason we don't get all the kids we want
- Our position/secondary coaches are the main reason we can't close on kids
- Things we type on this forum are the primary reason kids don't sign with us

And finally, I hear something to the effect of Joe's and Exes and Ohs and some way, some how, our losses are directly tied to that stuff.

So, perhaps Ole Miss has ALL the things we lack and their old Head Coach is just a very small percentage of why they lost games. Or is it a bunch of things that go into being successful?

At any rate, I'm surprised they felt he wasn't the answer because reports indicate the players did think he was the right person for the job. Also, as already mentioned, when I think of "impatient" and the whole, "we gotta win NOW" mentality...Ole Miss does NOT come to mind.

The end zone celebration versus MSU was probably the last straw that led to his dismissal. The optics on that were bad. The fact that it kept them from winning their rivalry game made it worse. The fact that it had happened before under his leadership and against Miss State (in 2017) made it even worse. Given time he might have done OK there.

Before the Egg Bowl it was said that whichever coach lost, Luke or Moorhead, was going to get fired. The antics of Elijah Moore, the player who pees like a dog, might not have been what got Luke fired. What got Luke fired was his reaction to the situation. In the post game press conference Luke tried to make excuses for his player by saying he was just a good kid who got caught up in the moment. He appeared too lenient and not in control of things.

Luke's record at Ole Miss was the best of their last four coaches according to an ESPN graphic
:wtf:

Luke was there 3 seasons, and he totaled 15 wins in that time frame. Freeze was before him with 24 wins in his first 3, and lasted longer meaning more total as well - he had 34 in 4 years. Before freeze was nutt, with 22 in 3 years and more total. Cutcliffe had 21 in his first 3 with more total, and Tuberville 19 in his first 3 with more total. The only coach in the last 25 years that was worse than Luke was Ed O.

Even if you take away a lot of freeze's and Nutts wins due to the NCAA vacating them, freeze still has 10 wins in one season not vacated. So 10 in 1 vs 15 in 3 lol. The 2 seasons that Nutt didnt have taken away also still eclipse Lukes 3 seasons as Nutt had 18 wins in 2.

Using stats to prove an argument? I like it.

holy lord.

Statistics are manipulations of numbers hence the old saying you can torture the numbers to show anything you want to show. Im using pure unfiltered history. Your use of stats to make a case that we "stopped someone" is opinion. My use of wins and losses is just pure fact. There is a difference.

The “stopped someone” was your spin on a fact I provided. Nothing more, nothing less. I have not contended that we “stopped” UGA - only attempted to and were somewhat successful based on the rest of their season. What is not up for debate was your incorrect assertion that Fromm performed poorly.

These are what are known as arguments based on "statistics." And as such, it is opinion/perspective. It is not fact. Wins/Losses are fact, they are not up for debate. If you actually read my original post I stated dwags have always been a heavy run team and that there have been plenty of QBs that have had success against us through the air but if we stopped their run game they still lost. Point being its about stopping the run against them and little more. You posted some stats saying Fromm had a statistically good game against us compared to his other games this year and that compared to other games we limited their running. Despite the fact that this is a statistical argument and thus one that is interpretive by very definition, and putting aside the fact that he's been pretty meh all season and just focusing on 279 yards (or whatever it was), fine. He played well. Ive already given you that in a previous post. What else do you want? However, it still doesnt change the original point I clearly stated that you seem to keep ignoring which is that its about the run. I even stated in that original post that their QBs have had very good outings against us but still lost when we stopped the run. I dont know what or how else to say this. Maybe you didnt actually read my original post so here it is.

The nail in the coffin was against dwags. We punted constantly while I believe they broke a record for 3rd down conversions made. It's got to get fixed - a big part of it will be getting size and talent on the interior of the line. Without it they will just continue to gut punch us with the run game year after year.

The formula for beating the buttsniffers has been the same every year since I've been born. Stop their run game and its game over. Even their best QBs struggled mightily without a run game. The only times theyve ever beaten us, theyve been successful on the ground. Theyve had plenty of successful through the air losses against us - the common denominator is always the ground game. Georgia is a running team, always have been, its their DNA. They still run the same dang run first offense that herschell walker was running 30 years ago. Stop the run and beat them no matter the year. Why this seems like such a mystery to the staff is beyond me but Im optimistic they have figured it out and is why we are seeing lots of bigguns getting crooted this cycle.
We can debate all day about whether or not we stopped, limited or whatever else you want to say about the run game, but in the interest of everyone lets just agree to disagree. And also, not spam other threads with this convo.

Is he a good recruiter? Or as good as the guy that just left them?

This is a very good hire for UGA. No, he's not as good as Pittman. Pittman is/was literally the best OL coach/OL recruiter in college football - so, no, nobody they could have hired would have been as good or better. Luke is now a former SEC head coach, which is always nice to have on staff. He's also been the OL coach at Duke, Tenn, Ole Miss and Murray State. Plus he's been the co-OC at Ole Miss & Tenn. I'd say it's a very good hire no matter how things ended at Ole Miss for him.

Supposedly a good dude too, right? First Ole Miss coach to get canned in a while without some sort of scandal chasing him.

Definitely a well like coach. The players were very upset about the firing, walking out on the AD when he addressed the team. I'm not sure how well he can recruit, but he brings an impressive resume and a ton of experience. It also speaks volumes on how Kirby snatched him up - while another coach we know tends to hire all of his buddies.

I don’t think hiring folks you have experience with is outside the norm. Hiring ONLY folks you do might be though. Mullen needs to branch out - especially on offense.
