In light hearted vein : When missionaries went into deep New Guinea jungle to make first contact with a pigmy tribe. Winning their trust, they led them out of their dense jungle to the open plains. Right off, the pigmies started giggling and pointing. They were laughing at the natives they saw far away, thinking that they were even smaller than pigmies. They never had to develop depth perception in dense jungle where the field of view at most was 5 feet ahead. So they believed those specks were the actual size of those people.
