So I now just learned in this thread that basically there are no great coaches, only men who stockpile the best talent and win on that alone. I had no idea that John Wooden and Bear Bryant couldn't coach a lick until just now. Gatorchatter has to be the most enlightening place on the internet.
For whatever else it may be, it ain’t dull!

I knew men who played ball under Bear. One, who got shot down over Laos, credited Coach Bryant with giving him the moxy to walk out of that jungle. On the other hand, when there were no scholarship limits, Alabama had 120 players on the sidelines, many of whom could have started at other SEC schools. I watched Bear Bryant's show on Sunday afternoon until he retired. He never talked about being out of position, just being out of heart and drive.

Bear Bryant was an incredible coach at Kentucky before he became a legend at Alabama. He would have been a great coach anywhere.

I had a close friend at Bama when Bryant arrived. The Bear changed the culture there by using the players he didn't want as tackling dummies. If Napier had done that, he would have saved a year and wouldn't now be on the hot seat.

Which is why you couldn’t close it earlier this month! Well, that and you still needed somewhere to post your 3D Printer project threads! :lol2:

I never stated that Wooden wasn’t a great coach, I shared that the state of college basketball was so different back then that his accomplishments cannot be compared to any coach’s achievements in the current game.
If all it took to win was stockpiling talent, then Calipari would be mentioned in the same sentence as Wooden and we all know that would never happen.
Any era versus era comparison of players and/or accomplishments can be a waste of time due to the evolution of the game. That’s all I was saying.

Wooden may have stockpiled talent in his later years, but his first titles were won with much thinner rosters. The first title team had two guys - Walt Hazzard and Gail Goodrich - who had pro careers. The next team had one - Goodrich. And while Lew Alcindor was all time great player - perhaps the greatest college player of all time - the first championship he team was on only had one other future pro - Lucius Allen.

Wooden would win 7 or 8 titles in a row even now.

And since we are on the subject of baseball, I'd just like to make a couple of quick points. I have no problem with Condon winning the Golden Spikes award(hard to say since he is Ugay dwag), his numbers were better. However, to give Honeycutt any award over Cags including being a finalists in the Spikes is straight up horse crap and no one with an inkling of baseball knowledge should or would deny that.

I do find some solace in the fact that the winner last year is still trying to find his way onto the Major league roster of the Nationals of all things while Langford is hitting Grand slams with the World Champion Texas Rangers. So maybe the voters for such things have become so politicized that the award isn't really indicative of what it is supposed to be about. I would expect to see the same results with Cags and Condon as we are seeing with Wyatt and Crews.

Hinted that Sully was going to make massive moves this offseason and he just made another one.
2024 SoCon Pitcher of The Year Michael Ross— originally from Lakeland— is transferring from Samford to Florida. He went 13-0 with 88 strikeouts and an ERA of just 3.27 as a starter.

I hope this means on the coaching staff as well.

On paper this is a nice pickup but it is not guarantee on two fronts. If he has great potential he may not make it to campus as he could easily be drafted. Or if not that high of a prospect even with those numbers, can he translate to SEC hitting? But we need quality arms and finding quality starts with getting arms.
