Very good win today and it should have been worse. We left double digit runners on base. Barco was excellent and kept the UK hitters off balance. He has tremendous potential and was the only pitcher all weekend in which UK did not hit the ball hard often. Pitched into the 7th. Scott gives up back to back solo homers in the 8th to shave the lead to 5-2, but at least he did not walk anyone before those homers. Gators pull away in 9th. Left too many guys on base and did not have to make any great plays in the field thanks to Barco. Always good to win a series on road. This will easily get us in as Regional host this week but not sure we crack the top 8. Our pitching is way too thin and too weak to carry us very far. that is why we have to get runners home when in scoring position and why the defense much be shored up.
As I suspected both Calilao and Acton started today. both contributed and Calilao stayed hot so he probably stays. Greenfield played catcher and there was only one wild pitch. Greenfield is awful hitter, but did draw a huge walk in the 9th so kudos for that. It was a pleasure to not watch Hickey flail away trying to catch a non perfectly thrown ball. Hickey played 1B and did field one hard hit grounder, so that was good. Might need to give Hickey less time at catcher as he looks worn down and his hitting is not as good. If Armstrong keeps swinging like he did today maybe Hickey can DH some as well. No need to catch him at Stetson. Let him rest.

Not sure where exactly to put this, but fun baseball event this weekend by a Gator family, so I'm putting it here. My 12 year old hit his first HR (210-215 fence) after taking a few out in practices and inter-squad scrimmages (he is definitely more of a contact hitter, very low strike out kid, but with enough power if he connects). Even better, it was in the second extra innning (8th), down 1, 1 out, with a runner on in a Sunday travel ball tournament, single elimination game. First pitch walk off for his first HR. It was pretty awesome for him and the whole team, who all went bananas. We've probably watched our kids play several hundred youth (LL and travel) baseball games and only seen a walk-off HR one other time, about 4 years ago.

Lol dude... Okay I'm all about Mike White and Mullen being questioned but good lord... Sully always does a bunch of experimenting until SEC play starts... We were up BIG going into the 9th inning in both of these games. If we were playing in a regional or super regional Sullivan absolutely wouldn't have kept in either one of the pitchers in the first two games for as long as he did. Sully's goal is much more long-term. He doesn't take any of these early season out of conference regular season games as seriously as any of us do. Rival or not he knows that there are 50 more games to be played and that in the big picture he needs to know what we need to do to get back to Omaha. trust me he isn't going to forget what happened in this first series and that he's going to make adjustments. If we lose to Miami like this in the actual regionals or super regionals I'll be the first one here calling for his head because the calls to keep pitchers in were absolutely horrible but I think he feels like he has to see what they're going to do in situations like this before the actual serious games begin.
these are glorified scrimmages we're going to be one of the best teams in the nation at the end of the year we're going to have home field advantage for regionals and probably super regionals too... Let's at least wait until the end of the season or halfway even before calling our coach a failure. It's freaking baseball and even the worst team can beat the best team on any given night.
I bet you if we played again next weekend. Vegas would still be betting on us. Let's wait and chill in the meantime
I actually watched that entire game, unfortunately. Sully is the worst manager in America, at any level: Little League, high school, college, the minors, or MLB. Good Lord that guy should have been fired before that game even ended.
Anyone defending him from this post will be given a vacation - tread lightly.

I know that taking 2 of 3 in the SEC on the road is "good" but doing so against the worst team in the league, playing like shyt and blowing a 4 run lead in the game you lost makes it seem like a wasted opportunity.
So after the Game 2 debacle I turn on Game 3 late and we are "gifted" the lead b/c the AU pitcher can't throw the ball 10 feet to the catcher. So we head to the home half of the last inning with a 3 run lead. Scott walks the lead off hitter and develops a blister so he has to come out. Far be it from me to blame Sully as a shytty game manager (he is) and spare me the "he knows his players better than anyone", and his 5 man pitching staff is finished. the number 9 hitter is due up (left handed hitter) followed by the lead off guy and #2 hitter (AU's best, righty then lefty). so what does Sully do? He brings in Carrion to pitch to the left handed #9 hitter, after having a lefty (Van Der Wielde sp?) warming up in bullpen. Mind you Carrion is marginal at best as a pitcher and has been on the field for over 2 games, about 6 hours at SS all day and is a righty. Well Carrion proceeds to walk the #9 hitter bringing the potential tying run to the plate (potential winning run on deck). So NOW Sully goes to the pen and calls on the lefty. Why is world would you not have brought in a true pitcher who is a lefty, has been warming up, to pitch to a left handed #9 hitter? Thankfully Van Der wild retired the next 3 only allowing one inherited runner to cross home plate, but would it not have been better to bring Van Der Wilde in and not throw a spent Carrion out there to pitch to a lefty hitter?
A different animal this weekend with Vandy coming in with Rocker and Leiter. I expect our guys to ring up 10+ strikeouts offensively on both Friday and Saturday with ease.
Championship teams don't take the night off against Stetson. We don't have a great hitting team, if we did Stetsons staff doesn't drop a 3 hitter on us. PERIOD. I see Riviera had another error last night. I guess Sully is just determined that this guy is gonna be a golden glover at SS. His footwork is freaking horrible and he gets played.
Of all people, Cory Acton saves the day as a pinch hitter (not his strength). Can't remember when Acton last played but he singles on a 3-2 pitch with 2 outs and the Gators down one run in the Top of 9th plating the tying run. Calilao follows with a 3 run homer and Gators win 8-5. Earlier Calilao had a pinch hit single plating the tying run at the time just before the Gators gave up the lead promptly after. Very ugly win as usual.
BTW another nightmare defensive performance by us. Carrion boots a ball that eventually allowed the go ahead run to score and Halter dropped a routine pop in the infield, but was able to still get a force out. BTW why was that not considered an infield fly rule?????
