Between 3D printing (even houses!) and the 5 axis cnc machines, the number of youngsters fluent in Rhino, solidworrks and cad cranking out cool stuff is amazing. My neighbor has a 3 axis homemade cnc in his garage for foam, wood and small aluminum. It is way cool. Unfortunately the cnc for dummies used too many big words for me.
Try Fusion360. You can get a free personal use copy. I would say it's easy to master but I'd be lying. However there are plenty of how-to videos on the you tubes. Once you make a model your friend can make the parts. Or you can find places online that will make them out of whatever material you can imagine.
But the key is to become proficient in Fusion360 (or a similar software).

Been having a ton of fun. There's a learning curve but it isn't that hard. I printed these things on a $250 printer.
