Waiting for La La Land to be free, I'll prolly enjoy it but I can't bring myself to pay for a musical... unless boobs. Other than Arrival and Hacksaw Ridge the only other Oscar nominee I have any interest in is Hell or High Water.

I still do the disk part if Netflix. Work from home and would go crazy without something in the background. Hell or high water was pretty good. So far though none of the Oscar movies have been top of the class though for me.

Free state of jones - watched this tonight. About farmers in the south tired of things being taken from them. They and some escaped slaves form a militia that fight the south from the other side even though they don't like the union either. The parts during the war are the best parts. It then goes to the struggles after the war and them trying to help things along and protect people from all the racists. Also has a lot of flash forwards to a trial of an heir over a marriage because they don't know if he comes from the white or black side of his lineage. It's an ok movie, but not as good or powerful as others on similar subjects. The last half hour starts to drag it along. 6/10

Life (2017): Sci-Fi, Space. I'm a sucker for any sci-fi especially if it's in space so I was looking forward to this. A probe has discovered evidence of life on mars and is bringing back a sample to be studied on the ISS where it can be quarantined. (A metaphor for immigration control :scratchchin: ). Turns out to be a good idea. The dormant life form comes alive and gets out of control. Ryan Reynolds as a wisecracking Space Cowboy and Jake Glycerol as the quiet brooder. Typical of the space horror genre the creature does what aliens do in closed environments while the crew figure out how to stop it. It's notable that they don't bother with the fake gravitation bs and everybody just floats the whole movie. No boobs. Not even something pretty to look at. Gratuitous oral penetration fu. Joe Bob says check it out.

Double feature night (sneak across the hall) to catch up on some recent releases on a big screen.

Pirates of the Caribbean, Dead Men Tell No Tales:
As others have noted, this does indeed come back to the feeling of the first one much better than the others. The 'almost boobs' are nice throughout with the one lead character. Being fiction, you have to suspend concerns over things that are unrealistic, especially when the base storyline is about ghosts and ships that can grow from a bottle to real size, but I will admit the one bit about an island that is a perfect reflection of the stars lost me for a bit. I mean, I get it, but it stretched my patience a bit too far. Though, I'll admit fully enjoying the bank robbery in the opening - that was fiction right in line with what I expected and had the anticipated humor throughout the chase. All in all, I liked it and would recommend it. It could stand on it's own, but definitely plays better as part of the series. 7.5/10.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2:
Loved seeing Kurt Russel at the beginning, and thought Sly Stallone's role was solid without being overdone. The whole film centered on Peter Quill (as others have noted, more of a StarLord film than a GotG) but it relied heavily on the sense of family - either Quill's heritage or that of the Guardians relying on each other, or even on the interactions between other characters. I'll admit, this time, Drax had more lines, and he had me laughing out loud at multiple points. I'd say it kept on par with the first for quality and I do look forward to the next volume. It might stand on it's own, but it obviously assumes you are familiar with the characters from the first film and is building on that foundation. I'm an admitted Marvel fanboy, but didn't know much of anything about this set of characters except having watched the first film. I liked this one, would recommend it. 8/10.

They are going to be appearing in the next two avengers movies. Will be curious how they mesh with the characters other than Thor.

Ben Hur (2016) - been a long time since I saw the original and it is definetly better than this one. Had a few changes but not many that I can remember. Any way it doesn't have the best acting and not even Morgan Freeman can save that. The story from my memory is the same and ends as a story of faith and redemption. The action sequences aren't bad but in my opinion if you want to watch this get the original. If nothing else on its two hours that you will slightly enjoy. 4/10

Alien covenant- buddy from work invited me to see it and since the wife has zero interest I took them up on the offer. I've been waiting to see what others thought because I have mixed feelings about it as it was something I was excited for.

Let's just say Ridley Scott is full steam ahead on his plan to show horn Prometheus into this universe and this plays as more of a sequel to it than a prequel to alien. It shows what happens to the two that survived the previous one and it was disappointing to say the least and he shoehorned how the alien we know was finally created in.

Anyway basically a crew is taking a bunch of people and embryos to a new planet to populate. They pick up a distress signal along the way and decide to investigate as this uncharted planet shows as paradise. They get there and Prometheus type stuff starts happening. Around the last 30 minutes alien type stuff starts to happen. The characters are not bad just you have no reason to care for any except a few. Why they would choose a bunch of married people to head a mission makes no sense as feelings get in the way of almost every decision. Not only that they make the stupidest decisions you could think of. There are two types of monsters and it's not until the one we know and love does it get to be what you came for. It's also really predictable and leaves questions you may actually want answered unanswered.

The cast was ok. Fassbender was good playing multiple parts and Danny McBride stole the show in my opinion. I thought it was a joke when he got cast, but it's nice to know he can do more than comedy. The main girl is ok, but no Weaver.

If you like Prometheus then you will enjoy this more than if you didn't. But if your expecting an alien movie you must have to wait until the next one. There is one set of boobs near the end from probably one of the only people you want to see them from. It's not a horrible movie but shouldn't say it's an alien movie either. 5.5/10.

I am still trying to figure out if this was any good. Finally saw it today. Scott is really stretching his canon. Two down and two movies left(28 calendar years before the Nostromo touches down on LV-426) to somehow bridge the gap. Lots of questions...not many answers. David is another screwed up android. Maybe we can borrow Harrison Ford from Blade Runner and end him.

undecided/10

I need to sleep on it and see what settles. I've seen every single one in the theater so we're talking 30+ years invested. I have this feeling I am going to be disappointed.

I'm the same way. Felt this should have been called Prometheus 2 rather than alien. It's not bad but was expecting more. That being said Scott has me a little scared about the new blade runner.

Wonder Woman was very good. And yes, Gal Gadot is about a 14 on a scale from 1 to 10.

Finally saw Guardians 2 - real good, but not as good as the first. Definitely a different pace in this one. Liked how they opened up Drax more, hit home on the family message, and the cameos were good. Five end credit scenes if you didn't stay and I found the groot one amusing. 8/10

Assassins creed - played the first two games in the series when I had time, before wife and kid, but wasn't sure how it would translate. The problem is that the game is a huge world with lots of moving plot points and cramming everything that made it good into 2 hours is hard. They strayed at times, in my opinion, two far from the source material. They also focused to much on the real world where in the games most of the plot takes place in the past. If it gets a sequel maybe it will explain more on exactly what they are trying to accomplish as it looked to be real world only after that. 5/10 but could rise if any sequel explains stuff more. Action is good and you don't need to know the games to get it with how they wrote it.

Fist Fight - basically a remake of the classic 3'oclock high from the 80s. Only teachers instead of student. Has its moments and is enjoyable for the most part. Ice cube still can't act that good after all these years but does ok. Charlie day is hilarious. Has a descent supporting cast that hit the marks when needed. It has this one girl though that keeps popping up in comedies that I don't find funny at all. That being said one teacher gets mad, challenges the other to a fight and the day is him trying to get out of it. That's the just if it. If you've seen the movie I mentioned before then you know everything that will happen but just in a slightly different way for the most part. I found it enjoyable, I laughed at some parts, and it wasn't to long for a comedy. 6/10

After a few days I have to say that Covenant sucked. There are more plot holes than I can count. Scott might be suffering from a mental illness of some kind. I'm not joking. It's like Prometheus never happened. We're supposed to believe that David engineered the Aliens? How the hell did the derelict ship(hundreds or thousands of years old) end up on LV-426 with the same eggs that David just engineered? Screw you Ridley Scott.

War on everyone- this ones on Netflix and marketed as a buddy cop action comedy. Essentially they are cops that walk the line of corruption and in doing so get pulled into a big time case. Basically they stumble onto a kiddy porn and drug ring by accident. Has a few laughs. Mostly from Michael Pena and the ending was pretty satisfying. Even with a run time of 1:30 I still was a little bored in it, felt like it dragged, and that it took a while to get to the main plot. Has a few boobs from stripper scenes. Would give this a 5/10. Watch when nothing else on.

Cars 3 - took my 4 year old to his first movie today, and it was an experience alright. So if you've followed these they are about racing. The first one was good and about the young guy learning. The second one wasn't very good and all about mater and is not mentioned anymore. This one he's the older guy who's loosing to the new hot shot and struggling to find his place among the new disrespectful generation. He goes to train and figures out what there is for him after it's all over. Most the people from the first return and it's on par with that one. Has some humor for adults but this series hasn't been like the other Pixar films and has been for a the kids. It's a 6/10 for adults and probley a 7 or 8 for the younger kids. Lots of tribute to the guy Paul Newman voices as well
